On Jan 30 Spurs played Cavs. Lebron scored 29 points in total. Of those 29 exactly ZERO were scored while Leonard was on him. Leonard was covering Lebron for most of the game.
That doesn't make sense. If Leonard was on him for most of the game and Lebron scored zero points while being guarded by him, then how did Lebron end up scoring 29 points? He really racked up that many points in the few minutes leonard wasn't on him? I find that hard to believe.
I do agree that defense is underrated, but at some point you have to put the ball in the basket. Leonard is a solid offensive player but that is it.
Yes, it does make sense. Lebron scored 16 of his 29 while the Spurs were in a zone defense. His other 13 came against Green, Aldrige, et al. I watched the game. I noted every Lebron score. And yes, it was ZERO with Leonard guarding him.
Your "few minutes" is a misstatement - purposeful or not. Lebron played 34 minutes. Leonard was on him for something like 20 of those minutes. And yes,, Lebron scored his 29 in the 14 minutes that Leonard did not cover him.
As far as Leonard being "a solid offensive player but that is it". No, he is the go-to option for the 2nd best team in the league. His scoring efficiency looking at overall FG%, 3-pt% and FT% is better than the following players:
James Harden - 2nd in league in scoring
DeMarcus Cousins - 4th
Lebron James - 5th
Russell Westbrook - 6th
Damian Lillard - 7th
DeMar DeRozan - 8th
Paul George - 9th
Anthony Davis - 10th
Jimmy Butler - 11th
His efficiency is about on par with Kevin Durant (3rd in league) and clearly trails only Steph Curry (but then again so does everybody else).
The only reason that Leonard is not a top 5 scorer in the league is because that is not how the Spurs play basketball.
