this is probably her best result in years.
Yay, Kara!!! She's on her way back. She should be ready by February. It's going to be fun!
13.1 @ 5:26 @ 37 years old. No chemicals. Very good.
Al's secret sauce is only for OP team players.
Remember when she did a 20 mile tempo in 1:49:04 (71:30 half marathon pace)?
Regardless, 71:13 is a big step in the right direction for her after a tough last couple years.
If she gets close to 2:26 marathon shape, I think she will be a big factor in the trials and will likely make the team.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the marathon course is very hard so I'm assuming the half marathon course is also a hard and slow course?
You're right, not an easy course
The half is a different course. It runs along the coast, meaning flatter, but potential for winds is high. The course features a 100 foot hill with 4% grade.

that's the word on the street
but how much does that word come from hobby joggers
and how much does it come from athletes that really train to win?
The course is fairly flat and easy. There are a couple of slight grades but nothing challenging. What was the weather like?

I have major respect for Kara Goucher, who is the only athlete besides Ryan Hall that I believe 100% has never taken any substances. She also firmly believes in god (to my understanding), so that's another plus.
Monterey has ridiculous hills and it gets super windy. When the sun is out it can also get quite warm. Given that, I'd adjust her winning time based on missing competition, toughness of course and weather conditions to 1:08:40.
This is a great result and I am glad to say: she's BACK!

Congratulations to her. Positive.
Kara was a great runner not too long ago. Somewhere I remember her saying that if she makes it to the trials injury free it will be the first year without an injury since the birth of her son. That has to have made a major impact on her ability to run fast in the last few years. Encouraged to see this result, especially since she didn't make a huge deal that she was running the race. Keep a low profile and get after it Kara!

This may be a list of people who have half marathon qualifiers for the Trials and no marathons, but it's not a complete list of half marathoners. As someone pointed out, Kastor is not on it. Neither is Krichen (sic), who beat Neely Spence Gracey in Philly.

Perhaps, but I am not sure because their are about a dozen U.S women capable of running 1:11 and about a half dozen capable of running faster than that. However, it shows she has turned the corner on coming back.
Big Sur is definitely a hilly course. This isn't the sort of place you go for prs. Its known for its scenery. Kara Goucher's result is very good in this light.
