I've posted on here many, many times about this topic. Be a man and go in and have a good conversation with your coach. When my athletes have done that I have appreciated it and respected their decision, and done everything I can to assist them. When athletes have gone behind my back and tried to hurt the program they sat out competition for a year where ever they transfered to. Always, always communicate with your coaches. Think about what you want to say, and write it down if you need to. Don't go in and assign blame to the coaches for every problem you might have had. Take responsibility and work to solve this issue positively. Part of going to college is the opportunity to grow up and deal with things like a young adult. Show that maturity to your coaches.
Good luck.
Transferring was a very good experience for me (dropped from 9:33 to 9:03 for my 3200 PR), but it certainly has its downsides. It's always tough readjusting, making new friends, and things like that. Having said that, however, sometimes it is the best thing to do. Like D1 Coach said, talk to your coach and try to get him/her on board, if not, hey at least you tried.

If you are unhappy, and have tried to fix the problem, it is better to transfer than stay there and hope things get better.
Last year I went to a decent school on a full ride, but clashed constantly with my coach and my running got progressivly worse as the year went on. I kept thinking I could make it work but finally I was beaten by a walk-on, and that was the last straw: I was outta there. Now, I'm paying my own way, but I am on a nationally ranked team and am in better shape than ever before. I might even get money next year.
Why are you transferring? Is it just running/the coach? Whatever the reason, go to your coach and talk it over. It's better than agonizing over what to do. I transferred after my freshman year and went from a 5K PR or 15:27 to 14:20 the following spring.
d1 coach couldnt be more correct. if you want to transfer, you have to tell your coach sometime. you can either go behind his back and seek a release, which the now ticked off coach may not give you or you can sit down like two men and talk it out. believe it or not, most coaches just want their athletes to be happy and if you get your coach to help, it will help things go a lot more smoothly.
if you are the d3 level you don't need to tell your coach. You can sign a release one time and for a month you'll be able to talk to all the d3 coaches you want. Not sure how it works with other divisions, but sounds like you need your coaches help.
thanks d1 coach thats pretty much what i was planning on doing
I think most coaches are pretty cool with you transferring. There are exceptions. I have a friend that wanted to transfer and just out of anger the coach was an ass and he had to sit out a year. I transferred this year, and it has worked out great so far. One of the biggest things is not to just look at the running, but look at the academics, coach, school life, and atmosphere. Just focusing on how the running program is is bound to cause problems, because you could end up hating everything else, and then you being unhappy will probably effect your running.
I transferred while I was running at a D1 school and I met with my coach to discuss it. We talked it out and I was granted a release without interference. I then transferred to my "dream" college, got injured and never ran another track race, but I met my now wife, and have no regrets over not being able to run, and ultimately I had to quit the team.
Bottom line, go to a place that will make you happy in all aspects of life, and talking it out with your coach like a man will give you the best bet at a smooth transfer.
Is it like playing Russian Roulette with Pol Pot to speak to a f***in running coach?
