Wayne LaPierre should be happy: another mass shooting 3 shot at Tenneesee State University

The drunk driving vs shooting comparison is a utilitarian argument and strikes me as more of a typical "only top line numbers matter" liberal argument than it does typical libertarian arguments. To a certain degree, gun-advocates that use this argument are pitting liberal-dumb-stats against the same liberals that often evoke such tactics.

This is an insufficient argument for me.

My reason to maintaining a society "flooded" with guns (btw I've not seen a gun for at least a decade when I used to go shooting with my uncle despite this so-called "flood") is three-fold, one Constitutional, one world-historical, and one selfish.

1. Our Constitution protects gun ownership for citizens to protect against tyrannical governments. One need look a current world events or State suppression tactics in our own society to understand this.

2. A well armed citizenry protects the nation as a whole from outside hostile entites.

3. Self defense. Police officers rarely stop crimes from happening (assault to robbery to mass shootings), the only thing that can equalize an asymmetric threat, specifically when given the element of surprise or physical differences (man vs woman) is a firearm - though better yet still, simply the deterrence of a potentially armed potential victim can be the difference.

In light of any and all shootings, I remain resolute: the issues of society should not be paid with by lose of liberty and the cost of lives lost is the expense of these liberties given our society's inability to deal with its own problems.

Do you guys really not get that? Liberals don't want to ban airplanes just because 9/11 happened. But they do want to keep weapons out of the hands of people who aren't fit to have them (the mentally ill). Why are background checks wrong again?

The same people who praised Bush for his response to 9/11 and were willing to do anything necessary to prevent another attack don't seem to make the same connection with guns at home... which, in mass shootings, or the church shooting in Charleston, are a form of domestic terrorism.

What don't I get? Not being sarcastic, I'd actually appreciate a reasoned conservative reply.

So by this logic because sometimes stores and people still get robed we should just make it legal and anyone can just walk into a bank with their balls out and akimbo machine guns shooting people because:

1. The laws that say you can't kill people and you can't steal from other people arnt 100% effective they are useless and this scenarios should be aloud to happen happen

2. the person going into the bank in the nude with two machine guns firing is pursuing happiness.

The alcohol lobby and the automobile lobby have been able to stop simple regulations that would save a lot of those lives killed in car accidents. For instance, roll bars and safety cages, which are so effective in race cars and would not add that much to the cost of a car.

Meanwhile, in Tampa this week, guys with sledge hammers punched through a wall of a gun store along a busy thoroughfare and stole 42 guns, some of which are sure to be used in more killings and crimes and which are not easily traceable, thanks to the NRA. Households with guns (the source of a lot of the stolen guns used in crimes) are 9x more likely than non-gun households to have a gun death. 10-12,000 gun homicides plus about 20,000 suicides from guns every year, but you think that's a good thing and will do anything to stop making guns traceable, making background checks universal (supported by about 90% of the population), limiting non-hunting weapons, etc.
