How to beat Cheserek at NCAA's

Seems excessive. All you have to do is knock over grandpa Ches's walker at the starting line and he'll break a hip. That should at least put him out of the top 5.

There is one, and only one way to beat Cheserek, and that is to run faster than him, from the start of the race to the finish.

However it works every time.

yeah im with you on this one. I say someone take this race out hard and Chez will follow then slow down and let someone else push the pace for 1k or so and slow it back down. Keep surging and he will respond to all pf them and then someone will be able to take the win. It will require a plan from other teams to work together which probably wont happen cause the teams like Colorado and Stanford that can have the numbers to work together wont want to risk the team title. Villanove might be a good team to do this cause they have 3 front runners that could work together to beat chez.

The methods being suggested might work if he was to run another preNats race that doesn't matter. He didn't want to lose there either.

In the real Nats race, he is not trying to get away with running as easy as possible. Therefore, if you take him out hard, once the lamb drops off, Ches will continue to run as fast as the pack. They might catch him eventually but more likely the second/third/fourth lambs will actually have to form a chase group to go harder and catch up to him. I'm sure they will get there but when they do they won't be in any shape to push the pace. If they do push it, he just repeats the process and gets even further away from the guy who is supposed to out kick him.

Like he said in his interview, he was trying to run as slow as possible not as efficiently as possible. None of them will beat an efficient Ches who doesn't give his lead up on purpose.

Pre-Nats was 8 k while NCAA is 10. Were Pre-Nats 10, Ches would most likely have won. I'm not sure that anyone racing will be strong enough to get far enough ahead to win.

This exactly. He wouldn't let anyone break away from him without at least maintaining contact through the middle section. He knows that in order to have a sure fire chance of winning, he needs to be within striking distance with 1.5-2 miles to go. The only chance anyone other than ches has to win is if someone can break away from the entire field that is being led by Cheserek. I don't see that happening as it would take someone who is stronger than Ches and mentally strong enough to lead a nationals race from wire to wire.

The thing we're not adequately considering is that nationals are often windy. It's hard to run solo from the gun into the wind. I bring this up because on a non-windy day you might finally see Cheserek just go from the beginning and leave everyone in the dust. But if conditions aren't ideal then anyone who does try to run away will have a tough time.

That begs the question: How slow will Cheserek allow the pace to go? If it's over 30 minutes like last year, can anyone prepared for a massive kick surprise?

It's probably been mentioned before, but last year's winning time was the slowest since 2006, possibly longer. (I don't have the results previous to '07 handy...)

The only way to beat Mr. Ches at NCAAs is to launch a barrage of attacks that only an idiot would respond to throughout the race. This will never happen of course as it would require a few sacrificial lambs. An attack strong enough to hurt Ches would surely cause anyone else in the field to blow up. Maybe a race strategy the UTEP kenyans could use to get Rotich the win?
