Indeed, as a visit to a First Nations reserve in Canada will show, the effects of 140+ years of Government Welfare are quite despairing. (This is not to criticize the people per se, as many of them have made a future for themselves, typically by moving away.)

Aboriginal villages in Australia tell the same story. It was a big deal some 15 years ago when a 19yo woman from one of them was elected to a regional parliament, and spoke out against the faux "charity" practiced toward them.

I've always felt that if we stopped all of the drunk college kids that go to Cancun on Spring Break at the border this country would be a better, much more disease free place for the same reason.

Columbus was a great explorer whose feat was of world historical significance. He was also a murderous butcher.

The result for Native Americans was genocide and conquest. We don't celebrate Hitler for conquering other countries and killing their inhabitants, do we? Maybe you do on the far Right.

Interesting discussion, but rather a lot of rhetoric over an issue that shouldn't be so difficult to deal with. Let's keep it simple. The holiday, I believe, was an attempt to memorialize the incorrect founding of America. Somewhere along the way, a majority of states and the federal government decided it was Columbus that should be honored so and not Leif Erickson. Now, were we to celebrate Erickson day, I am sure some of you would find reasons for him to also not deserve recognition.

To me, the solution is quite simple. Don't have holidays named after people, period. What is the point of having a holiday that people today have little knowledge about and or don't respect who it is named after. This holiday is no more relevant today than Groundhog Day, other than it means a nice long weekend for many of you who work for a living.

All this other stuff you are arguing about, really has nothing to do with this holiday. It is an intellectual exercise in philosophy where your college education comes into play. Good for you, I have no problem with this and enjoy reading some of the posts. However, I am guessing the top philosophers in the world today are not posting on LRC.

Tell you what, there's no party like a Comrades Day party in Afghanistan.
