i consider myself extremely interested and updated on the world of running
however, out of their 'champions' section I've never heard about
Amelia Boone
Ellie Greenwod
Rob Krar
Very few even among the running community will have heard of Lauren Fleshman or Scott Jurek (he's an ultra runner right?).
obstacle fckwittery. Get a grip, RW.
It's obvious they don't know how things really work behind the scenes or who it is who pulls the strings at the big meets
"The identical twin brothers"
in the pic it looks like one of them is taller than the other. And they certainly don't look the same.
"The boards, which allowed for anonymous posting until recently,"
What, I'm not anonymous now? (I realise mods can dive into my IP if they had any reason to care about who I am but they always had that opportunity, no?)
Not a single disabled/challenged athlete worthy of consideration? Except as a freak article? And Bobbi Gibb should be there instead of Switzer.

I'll take them in order of what should be most embarrassing to least....
Scott Jurek? Really? Have you heard of an obscure little book called Born to Run, which sold a gazillion copies? He was a central character in the book, which was read by all interested and updated runners as well as non-runners looking for a colorful read. Ask your grandmother about Scott Jurek. She can probably update you.
Lauren Fleshman. If you were following running as recently as 5 years ago, you'd know Lauren was a significant distance runner and the US 5K champ multiple times. (Okay. So you're young and don't read)
Amelia Boone - as an interested runner I have my TiVo set to pick up all sporting events related to running and t&f. She's big in the Spartan world, and just last week I watched her compete in a rerun of the Blue Mountain race. Was actually there the day after she competed to cheer on my son in law who ran the sprint distance. She was also on the cover of Runners World not to long ago. (Don't you at least glance at the running mags when your in a store?)
Ellie Greenwood. Less embarrassing to miss her as ultras don't get air time or much coverage outside of a few magazines with smaller circulation numbers. I happen to know the name because she won the JFK 50 the last time I ran it. She's put together some impressive wins.
learn to read, it says most people won't know who Lauren Fleshman is, I do know her but in the real world of running, looking outside the tiny US bubble, she is a nobody compared to Haile or lots of others. She certainly is not one of the 50 most influental people in running!
As for the rest. So you confirm they are all ultra plodders . ZzzZZZzzZZZzzZZZzzz. Wake me up when we are talking about someone who actually RUNS FAST. Coz ultraslow people don't interest me.
Wejo and Rojo over Salazar... you have got to be kidding me! Not to mention crybaby Goucher and David Epstein up top.
Call me when those four coach a native born American to an Olympic silver,a height dis-advantaged Italian to the podiums of the WCs, and a subpar Somalian to multiple golds.
This isn't a ranking, just the 50 people.
Cheers to the brojos.
Surprised to not see Floreani or Ryan Fenton on there. For people 30 years and younger, they have the ubiquity and some significant influence.
for coaches, I don't see how you leave off Canova and Brother Colm.
Nice article. Is it really true registration is required now? That seems like a misprint. Registration is only required for one thread on this entire board, right?
Glad to see Ray Maker is there. Love his site and he responds to nearly all comments.
Nice to see Duanne Hill there with all the work he did in the 90's.
Nice list but one name short. Bob Anderson who FOUNDED Runners World. Bob sold the magazine years ago but is still involved in the sport both as a runner and an innovator.

C'mon RW - "first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon" is false. In accordance with AAU rule, women were unofficial participants in all US road races until 1972.

Discus.

I'm pretty sure the list is top 50 today not 5 years ago. Who cares about a bitter washed up granola bar saleswoman?

Clearly the list misrepresents the term influential people in running.
There are far many more individuals that have a greater impact on the whole of the sport and contribution.
It would have been much better if one had made the list, but not the other.
Congrats.
