Okay, so if I understand this whole Lydiard deal (and maybe I don't, so feel free to correct me), the idea is to fully develop the aerobic system before doing any anaerobic work. Therefore, 140+ mile weeks (at a very slow pace) become the norm during a base/buildup phase....
For me (and I imagine many others as well), 140 miles a week is simply not possible (and don't give me the 'if you can't handle the mileage, you're running too fast' spiel...i just can't handle the mileage). I can safely run about 65-80 miles a week. Has anybody ever considered the idea of doing large amounts of aerobic work on a bicycle or in the pool while supplementing that with something like 60 mpw on the roads? Such a program would give the same cardiovascular/aerobics benefits of long slow distance, right? And yes, I realize that the legs would not be developed in the same way, etc, etc. but I'm talking solely about the heart/lungs/oxygen-using system.
Any experience? Theories? Ideas? Studies?
Thanks.
