My high school kids are into their summer training. I think my boys team has a shot at being decent this year (small school, central california).
Here's the progression I've got mapped out.

Of course, things never go 100% according to plan and adjustments will certainly have to be made along the way. A couple of notes.
In general, from June to late September, our training is geared to run as fast as possible without incurring fatigue. The hardest workouts during that period will be the low key races in September. From October-November, the training will be geared toward being able to run fast with very high levels of fatigue. I'll video one of our "Back Burner" workouts (patterned after Canova's speed endurance circuits). We did this workout (3 times total in october) for the first time last year, and I felt that it really helped the team.
The summer is a bit of a departure for us. This is the first summer where I am going to have formalized "workouts". I don't think anyone would argue that 2 x 1 mile at 8k pace is very difficult, but that is not the point. The point is to get 5-7 of my guys running faster than a normal, conversational pace and thinking about keeping that strong pack together as they get fitter and faster.
