Fifth place in Doha in the women's 1500 went to a certain Gega Luiza of Albania - yes Albania - this is the first time, if I am not mistaken, that this country (Albania) had produced a world class runner.
Not a bad thing, and Albania is a country blessed with a good Mediterranean climate, mountainous terrain, some areas over 1500m for altitude etc.
Should be interesting for the future.

World class Albanian runner! Where did she spring up from?

Given that part of the world, next to Greece, use of PEDs wouldn't surprise me.

I researched for a while and I found out that she apparently comes from Albania.

Albania! Albania!
You border on the Adriatic.
Your land is mostly mountainous,
And your chief export is chrome. -
I suspect Albania, but I'll look into it and get back to you. Stay tuned....

Gega has been on the pro scene for a while. She finished 3rd in the 1500 at Euros a while ago. Really ought to try her hand at the 5 or 10 as the Albanian records in these events are really weak. She trains in Tirana (sp) and attended university there.

Ghost in China
At 26 1/2 she is currently experiencing her future as a distance runner.
funny you brought this up I had tavë kosi for dinner last night which made me try to think of well known Albanian T&Fers- I came up empty. -
So Liam Neeson left a few Albanians alive?
-
tstst

I thought Neeson was 'Taken' with Albanian men only.

If she is then ghost will surely be on here defending her. -
The magical land between Serbia and Greece

She sprang out of Zeus's skull.

Albania had another semi-decent female 1500m runner back in the 1980s, Pavlina Evro. She scored an upset win in Nice, one of the IAAF meets on the circuit back in the day.

...and this is pretty much Albania's international athletics history. Gega is their best -- which isn't saying much locally, but she does have reasonably good marks and progressions, and has been in recent championships:
800m, 1500m
2:11.39, --------- (2008)
2:09.73, --------- (2009)
2:05.84, 4:23.20 (2010)
2:02.94, 4:14.22 (2011)
---------, 4:08.65 (2012)
2:01.96, 4:05.11 (2013)
2:01.31, 4:03.12 (2014)
---------, 4:02.63 (2015)
In 2011, she was in the Euro Indoor, WC and World University Games -- all in the 800. Did not progress past first round in the EIC & WC, and made the sf at WUG. In 2012, she was in the WIC and EC -- in the 1500 -- did not advance. 2013 WC, she made the sf in the 1500. Also was 4th in the 800 & 2nd in the 1500 at the Mediterranean Games that year. 2014, she made the final at WIC, and was 6th. Also in the EC 1500 last year, but did not advance. -
