26,44 divided by 2 is 13.22, one second below the qualifyer limit. Anyway you look at it his split(s) should count as qualifier(s); either the first 5000 was faster than 13.23, the second half was faster than 13.23 - or BOTH was 13:22!
Rules are rules. Rupp needs a qualifier for 5k. Hobby-jogging 14:54 won't get it done.
My argument is that he already OBVIOUSLY has that qualifyer.
Not less impressive that it was done on double the distance!
Times in the 10,000 could be accepted as qualifiers as early as January of last year, but for the 5000 and other events, not until after October. Rupp doesn't have a qualifier because he hasn't run a 5000 in that period.
Right now, there are only two women and two men with qualifiers in the 1500. There hasn't been that much elite track action yet. Tonight, maybe that will change.
Rupp does not have that qualifier. Stop complaining. A 5k race qualifier is required, not a 10k split.
If they ran that 10,000 race in the 5000 qualifying window (which he didn't) and they took an FAT split at the 5000m mark it and it was under the qualifying time it would count for qualifying purposes.
If he negative split the race and only the second half of the race was under the qualifying time it would not count for qualifying purposes.
Besides, he ran 13:01 after that 10,000m race, which would certainly work but it was not done in the 5000 window.
So, even if your theory of OBVIOUSLY were valid, his actual 5000m performance was faster than his average 5000 in that 10,000 race.

So now one of the ten best 5000 runners in the world might have to drop off an early surge tonight just to be on the safe side and secure a qualifier down the line!

Also, the 10000 meters on track is already a dying event worldwide - clearly that effing rule isn't helping that bit one iota! :-(

Has nothing to do with 5k/10k splits. The 10k and marathon qualifying window is open MUCH longer than the 5k.

The problem with your idea is what "split" do you use. What if from 2112m to 5112m is okay, but 1m to 5000m, or 5001m to 10000m is not? Can of worms.
If it counted, it would have to be the first 5000m, not the second (as, for instance, when you run a mile and they count the time at 1500m for qualifying purposes, not the last 1500m of a mile), since that would have a running start and he did not run his first 5000m under 13:23 anyway. He closed fast. The qualifying window was set after the entire 2014 track season, except for 10000m and marathon, which in my view is ridiculous since it forces everyone to run time qualifiers prior to their national championships, entailing potentially three peaks in 2015. What good does that serve? But this is not a concern for Rupp. He'll run much faster than the qualifying time. It could be an issue for some of our guys, not him.

Not really. It could just be the first 5000 of the race, much like the first 1500 could be a valid split from a mile race. The idea being the split must be from a standard starting position.

Not for those runners who are truly WC quality material. If a runner has to peak to get a qualifier, good them for getting a qualifier, but it's very doubtful those runners will need to peak for the WC.

The window closes Aug 10th for IAAF.
USATF gives US athletes until Aug 9 this year.
So they do not have to hit the standard prior to national championships.
No need for 3 peaks.
There should be no concern for these guys to hit the needed standard by Aug 9 without fully peaking if they are good enough to contend for a medal.
The US is deeper than in the past, so anyone that can get top 3 at nationals should easily hit these standards in July overseas if not before.
A better question would be why is the 10,000 still a championship event?

He's never been one of the ten best in the world, and certainly not now that he's not even been competing.

He was ranked #4 in the world by trackandfieldnews.com, had the 7th best time last year, and finished 7th in the World Championships. He has the 7th fastest indoor 5000m of ALL TIME. Any way you look at it, he has been in the top 10 in the world. I know you hate to read it, but it's true. Deal with it!
