I was just driving through and didn't stop.
I lived in the outskirts of the city for 2 years back in mid 90s. Drove through the bad area because I got lost and it was crazy scary. I still vivid remember a sign that says Homeboy Juice by a run down flap house. I still have no idea what that meant. Probably some malt liquor. This was all before Google so I had no idea WTH I was getting into. My second week at the university. I looked up the map at the library and I figure I run into the city of Baltimore (about 7 miles) and walk around the city and take the school shuttle back. Holy crap. Only thing I think that saved me that day was me wearing short shorts which confused a lot of the inner city youths sitting on porches and standing around in corners. Then I kind of figured out most of Baltimore is must stay away except by U of MD medical school area/inner harbor and I was told by Johns Hopkins. One upside is the cost of living (mainly housing) is so low. Compared to NYC area, you can live like a king over there.
Yes. It's vile.
A racist thread about Baltimore on LR? No way! Never thought I'd see it.
The north side is nice (think roland park) and the inner harbor is nice. However, especially around the inner harbor, you can wander 4 blocks away and be in a warzone.
I had to make a detour once and we were right by Hopkins…the med school, not the hospital. It’s dystopian to drive through, at night no less, a place where half of houses are abandoned, there are liquor stores everywhere, and you don’t know if the youth are going to try to carjack you
