Which State Has Best All-Time High-School Cross-Country Team?
Here are my selections for the all time Illinois XC team based on both HS and senior career.
Scoring 5- Craig Virgin, Chris Derrick,
Jorge Torres, Donald Sage, Tim Broe
Pushers- Jim Spivey, Evan Jaeger
Likely Challengers Oregon- Prefontaine, Rupp, then .....
Michigan- Ritzenheim, Fisher, then ....
California- Meb K, Hall then...
Illinois Top 5 Credentials
Virgin- Two Time State Champ, HS 2 mile Record Holder for 25 plus years, NCAA Champ, 2 Time World XC Champ, 10,000 M US Record Holder, still holds the IL HS XC course record of 13:50 or is tied with Derrick depending on who you talk to.
Did I mention he won the World XC champs? Twice.
Jorge Torres- Three Time State Champ, Footlocker Champ, NCAA Individual and Team Champ, Olympian and World XC Team Member
(marathon career cut short by fluke car accident)
Chris Derrick- State Champ, NXN champ, 2nd at Footlocker, 2nd at NCAA XC, current contender in world class XC
Tim Broe- Two Time State Champ, Two Time USA 4k XC Champ, 2004 US 5k Champ, Olympic Finalist
Donald Sage- 2nd behind Torres soph/junior year then won state XC in 14 flat, ran a 3:58.x 1600 M the year before Webb broke 4, three time all-American at NCAA XC, 1500 M Champion at 2002 NCAA Outdoors
Pushers- Spivey ran 14:00 at ste and got second, went on to run a 3:49 mile and was a two time Olympian in the 1500 and 5k, Jaeger was state champ in hs xc and is now the US steeple record holder and top ten in the world.
I didn't count Lukas Verizbakas despite state champs, 2 mile hs record and 2 Footlocker champs. Verizbakas focused on triathlon rather than running post highschool and hasn't yet returned to top form since serious bike accident.
While I think Illinois hs xc tradition is pretty strong, I'd be interested to learn about other state's stop performers. Thanks-
I mean no disrespect to the many other great IL runners who I left off of list like Merrick (who beat Virgin when Virgin was a sophomore), Graves (who beat Spivey), Ed Torres, Pilja, Pfifer, Jim White, etc.
