So as usual all of us fools try to help a young guy. We all take the time to suggest things and maybe hit something that can bring him on. As usual he disappears, we all wasted are time. What are these kids just dreamers?

Run your own race until the last lap. If he passes you and does his usual surge stay with him, don't let him get more than 3-4 meters. Start pushing with 120 to go and give it all you got with 80 to go.
Don't overthink and run the whole race based on him as you really don't know what kind of shape he's in. If he doesn't pass you, then he's not in as good a shape as you are. Kick, but save something for the last 80.

Wait. You run a 4:32 mile and only a 2:10 in the 800. I'm assuming that's because you haven't raced it that much. If you can run a 4:32 mile than you are more than capable of running faster than 2:10 in the 800. You could probably run a 2:05 if you really tried.
Yeah I rarely run the 800, but anyways just thought I'd come back here and let you guys know the race is tonight at 8. Just running the mile and no other events. I'll let you know how it goes.
a mile race at 8pm in primetime?? what channel??
Since you are a longer distance guy if you haven't raced recently, you are going to be rusty. He also sounds like a longer distance guy. You both will be lucky to break 4:40.
The best way to break 4:40, as a rusty 4:32 guy, is to try to run 70, 70, 70 and then race the last 400. The first 70 will feel fast. The second and third more likely will be 71 and 72 but you should have a good last 400.
That doesn't give you an advantage but it does set you up for a fastish time.
As others have said, as a longer distance guy, worrying about beating another longer distance guy in the mile in January is a recipe for trouble. Just run the fastish time. With a 4:32 last year, the practice at 70 pace is really important because you might just be able to make 70s for 3200 by the end of outdoor.
Won it by a huge margin!!!! We took off and I just jumped right behind him and we were away from everyone else in no time. Came through at 70 for the 400 and 2:18 for the 800, not sure what the 1200 was but I made my move at 600 to go and just emptied the tank and blasted right by (still feeling great) and opened up an enormous gap throughout the last lap to come in for a new PR of 4:27. Huge negative split too.

Your 60 mpw and 6 mile Tempos are serious! Don't know what your speed and intervals are like but Im wondering if your a bit stronger than you think? I wonder if your opponent has been putting in this distance? My first thought was what about a full negative split last half.. 800? So, I don't know, say you come across at 2:18 at the 800, so your goal is to go fairly even, a 2:11 last half. He has got to go with you the full last 800. Negative split training like 5x600 or 5x800 running the last 400, 5 seconds faster pace than the controlled first 400 helps with this.
I was close 2:18! Good race. Sorry missed your post I was mad thought you disappeared. Good luck this year. Time to blast thru to the teens outdoor.
Awesome race! Looks like your 2nd 800m was a pr too! Great job!
Good job! Best of luck in the future.
And just to get this clear. You got a 2:09 on last 800? Great job.
