I'm really pissed off and I want to beat his ass but that is frowned upon these days. He is a good kid who does well in school and he never has been in trouble but I cant let him get away with this. Taking away his phone doesnt seem like its enough.

take away his phone, ground him as well

Really? I heard he stole his father's car recently. Gee, I really hope his father punished him accordingly for it and grounded him for an appropriate amount of time as well as talked to him about WHY it was wrong and other people he could have affected by stealing it.
He doesn't respect you. You need to change that
peer group is likely involved on some level
Make him stand on a busy corner with a large sign around his neck that says, "I stole my dads car and and this is my punishment." Probably just a half hour on the corner with the sign will give him enough time to realize hell never want to get caught doing that again.
How'd you catch him btw?

That's actually a very good punishment, you'd have to ensure he didn't leave though.
make him tweet or post to his facebook a selfie of himself with the sign every 10 minutes.
A better sign would be
"I stoled my pop's ride but I didn't reck it"

Hey gramps,
I'm much younger than you- listen:
You don't know much about your high school son. HOW THEY ACT AT HOME MEANS SHIZ TO THEIR ACTUAL PERSONALITY.

Nah just him, the sign and the people starin at him. Letting him use social media would allow him to make a joke out of it.
You should let me spank his little bottom until he squeals.
Make him drink Diet Coke.

Damn good idea! This morning my car keys were not in the same place I put them last night. Also, I only listen to local sports talk and political talk radio in my car. When I got in my car this morning the radio was on Aux. My wife is out of town, it had to be him using my car. He is denying it but I KNOW he is lying.
Feed him really unhealthy food so that he gains a lot of weight and gets diabetes.

Because you know who owns the car you steal doesn't make the crime of stealing a car any better - your son is a felon. He's a very bad kid. You are clearly a terrible parent. Don't worry, he'll end up in a federal penitentiary one day, while sadly you will go unpunished for your criminally poor parenting.
Sell your car and buy a Pinto.
Go AP on him.
Why'd he steal it? To pork one of his lady friends, or just go see a movie or something? You need to diagnose the actual problem so you can determine the solution for the cause. It might have nothing to do with disrespecting you.
Force him to watch Nicolas Cage act in" Gone in 60 Seconds"
