Tuesday I wanted to do some sort of MP workout, but I was apparently still tired from traveling last week and bailed 1.5-2 miles into my MP after I couldn't shake a cramp. I felt better in the afternoon and tried to do a shorter tempo, but bailed again after 2 miles in 10:49.
I was just going to run easy til my half marathon on Sunday where I had planned on running at around MP effort, but on Thursday afternoon my legs felt pretty good so I threw in a spontaneous 2-mile pickup in 10:42.
Today's race just got out of hand... I won this race l last year in 70:45 and by almost 3 minutes, but a couple of fast dudes showed up and had the same idea as me. Unfortunately their "tempo" is just a bit faster than my "tempo" but by them easing into their workout/race I got suckered into running way faster than I had planned without realizing it. By the time I hit about halfway and realizing I had an outside shot at running a PR I just said "what the hell" and went with it til the wheels came off.
Rough splits: 5:05, 5:12, 5:08, 5:04, 5:02, 5:02 (10K in about 31:40ish, would be a decent PR but unfortunately no timing mat) 5:10, 5:08, 5:15, 5:29, 5:25, 5:16, 5:12, 0:36 (0.12).
The race was a downhill race at mild altitude, so supposed to be about sea level equivalent. (If it means anything, I improved 2:33 between this race last year and Houston 6-7 weeks later) Most of the elevation loss comes in the first 8-9 miles though so I didn't actually die as badly as it seems, but I sure would have liked to have hung on just about 10s/mi faster between miles 9 and 11.
