Because a 2:12 marathon would be nothing special for an elite runner?

Wasn´t that what Teg ran in his debut?
Using the same logic of "a runner who is faster at shorter distances should be able to clean up at longer distances".....
As has been said previously..there have been guys with legit marathon times under 2:10 to not perform well at 100k and above...similar to the slower 5 runner beating the faster one at the marathon.
Bolt should easily break 4:00 in the mile....
A faster 5k runner should easily be able to beat a slower 5k runner in the marathon. ..
We know these things to not be true. Different athletes are built to succeed at different events. A 100k ultra or a crazy mountain race are similar to the marathon as the 100 is similar to the 400. Can top 100 runners run top 400m times. Yes, but its not common. Could top marathon runners run top times at 100k and above? Sure, but again it would not be common.
Dan Held was a sub 2:14 marathoner some years ago who got 4th at these 100k championships beaten by runners with slower marathon creds
Its a different races.

Dan Held took 4th, but like other few fast marathoners (2:12 - 2:15 range) who ran this year's World 100k and in years past, can't judge much on one effort. One race they go out hard and it's not their day, the next race they crush it. Especially at 100k... a lot can obviously happen! Held was a great runner and certainly could have accomplished much more in ultra running if he would have entered more races. Max has a sub 6:20 in him and I strongly believe Held had a sub 6:20 100k in him as well!
Held comments on his brief stint running ultras:

I think most of us would strongly agree "not all Worlds are created equal!" Much more love than hate on letsrun for Max and his great performance, but please don't compare the 100k Worlds with the other World running events. All you had to do was watch the live feed and scan the results to see that 95% of the runners were not "World Class" athletes.
Anyone know if Max is still being coached by Jerry Smith? Or what his current training is like?

Yeah, that was a great marathon debut for Teg... I think not.
6:27 is good, but 14 minutes slower than the WR.

You assume wrong.
Max will have a good shot at winning Comrades, but my guess is that he does not win it in 2015.
