Religion is the excuse we lay on extremist nut jobs. Radicals will always be radicals. Blaming Islam is the convenient scapegoat to create an US vs THEM mentality. It's easier for an unknowing and ignorant public to get behind an idea if the choice is presented as black vs white.

I agree with you to a great extent BUT:
Every faith, cult, and political movement could have offshoots/branches with multitudes of adherents willing to commit immoral acts. (Westboro Baptist Church, the Kahane Movement, the Wahhabis/Taliban/Hamas, etc. and most of communism)
Today, we're living in a world where Islam has developed several such offshoots and courted multitudes of adherents willing to commit murderous acts. So yes, blaming all of Islam and all Muslims is wrong. On the other hand, it is perfectly legitimate to criticize and fight the radical strains within Islam as such - as opposed to as a collection of murderous psychopaths that just happen to be Muslim.
