He should have covered up or turned his back. He's too famous to deck his wife and then drag her halfway out the elevator and leave her there.
I wonder what they were arguing about?

There is the legal concept of equal reciprocity. If she pushes him, he can push her back. If she hits him in a light way, he can do the same. He loses legally when he responded to a light smack with a knock out blow. The same concept applies to weapons, etc.
Finally someone has the right answer. Since she hit him twice without doing any damage I would think it would be even harder for Rice to get anyone, save letsrun, to believe he thought she could knock him out, so he met her with equal force by punching her lights out.

This is a ridiculous analysis. You act like he had time to analyze the situation, talk to his lawyers and then act. He had a drunk, rabid, crazy woman spring across an elevator to hit him and he reflexively swung at her to stop her. you don't even know if he had an open or closed fist because the video is too grainy. if i had to guess, i would guess an open hand because had he punched her with a closed fist she would have had a lot more damage to her head. it also wasn't a "knock out blow." the handrail was what knocked her out. given this set of facts -- not your fictional version -- he was entirely in the right to have swung at her to stop her from committing a felony against him. it's truly amazing how out to lunch some of you people are with reality.

1) She provoked the punch from him by repeatedly hitting him. This is absolutely mitigating in my mind.
2) She also committed a crime, which no one will discuss.
Haha "what he did wasn't ok, and now let me tell you why it was ok""
You don't know what mitigating means do you?

However, Janay hit him twice before he hit her. She was clearly coming across the elevator to hit him again when he punched her. Is this not also domestic abuse?
Why is it ok for women to hit men?
Yes it is. Mr. Rice could have then contacted the police and pressed charges.
It's not OK for women to hit men. Mr Rice could have pursued the matter through the legal system. Instead he chose to deal with it himself.
Now he pays the consequences.
That is all.

1) It was absolutely in defense. He retreats across the elevator giving her space and she comes across to hit him again. This is not even debatable.
2) I dont want to say he did nothing wrong. I want you to address why no one is placing some of the blame on her and why no one thinks she should be charged.
Ray Rice is 100% wrong. His wife is 0% wrong. If you don't understand this then that says more about you.

Nope.
Ray Rice is 100% wrong. His wife is 100% wrong. If this is too subtle of a concept for you then that says a great deal about your cognitive capabilities.
Seriously, you just can't make this stuff up.
Thanks for the laughs.
Maybe you can't make it up but it is correct. The video quality is crappy.

You guys are great!
For the exact same reason people talk about shark bites and not hamster bites.

Serious question. Obviously, Ill preclude this by saying what Ray Rice did was terribly wrong and dangerous.

Why is it ok for women to hit men? If that was a 130 lbs man hitting ray rice and rice decked him people would be upvoting this on Reddit and he would be a tough guy.
So sick of the double standards...
Yeah, I see. Some army woman was groped and she beat him up until he was on the ground and kicked him until the police came 10 minutes later. Same cenario: some douche/douchette bag starts it with moderate attack and then the othe person uses excessive force and destroys the other person. In one circumstance, the man was the the person who started it. He got charged and convicted. In the other circumstance, the woman started it, the man destroys her, and the man gets convicted. #biased
The essence of this case is that she forgave him. She is now being victimized twice, by having his livelihood taken away and by having the videos played endlessly. There needs to be more concern for her wishes. We will probably never know their deal and it's none of our business.
I give my wife oral sex all the time. She orgasms many times. She never gives me any oral sex. Do I have grounds for divorce?
Rice's suspension isn't for life, it's indefinite. The league must have to present a set of criteria the Rice needs to accomplish before he's allowed to participate again. There are players who have killed people playing in the NFL, this pales in comparison. Personally I think Vick's crime was worse than Rice's, those poor dogs had no options. Now, if an owner wants to bring Rice onto the team and face all the uproar is another question. But Rice definitely deserves another chance, that's the 'mercan way.
It's the NFL. Who cares? They are nothing more than modern Gladiators. I'd be curious to see if NFL players have lowered life expectancies.
NFL's been dropping since "North Dallas Forty" came out.
I have completely lost my interest in North American Football and have gained more respect for soccer players.

You make an air-tight argument.
First off, it's "You're stupid". You forgot the apostrophe.
Also, you're sexist. Basically, this is the mindset people have to get around. People go hog wild if a man touches a woman (including feminists). But is a woman touches a man, women cheer them on.
If we want real equality, our society needs to treat everyone equally.
Rushing to tell him he was stupid so fast of course I would forget the apostrophe. And Ray Rice is a PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL PLAYER. Do you think his much smaller fiance could have hurt him at all? Not even close.

Not really.
They are both young. They can get real jobs like everybody else. Oh, they won't be making millions every year and mixing with the rich and famous. Boo Hoo.
