Any coaches having a hard time predicting how well their high school runners can ultimately run this year?
Mine run great workouts then can't race to save their lives. And I don't think they're sapping all their energy in workouts.
Like my top 3 did 2 sets of 8x400 with a 200 jog between in 60 seconds at 1:15 pace (goal pace) a few weeks ago, but their best times are: 16:29, 16:37, 16:57. I think they should be able to run high 15s off a workout like that.
And Monday those 3 did 16x300 at 50 seconds with a 100-meter jog at 30 seconds in between.
And we've also done a workout recently where they run a hard mile on our track, do tempo pace to our middle school (3 hilly miles), do a hard mile on that track, run tempo pace back to the high school, and another hard mile. Miles were 5:05, 5:11, 5:10, and the 3 mile times were: 20:05, 18:55.
They ran 800 miles this summer, with a 100-mile week at our team camp, and hit 70 mpw during September, and then 60 the first 2 weeks of October and are now at 50 mpw as we taper for the big meets.
Am I overestimated their ability or do they just race like crap? How do others coaches figure that riddle out?
Any help, and I don't need any "you're a dumbass for 20 reasons," would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
