A buddy is about to meet this chick he's met over the internet. They live in the same state (ok, actually it's me). Do you think I should go meet her? What if she's a boring freak? But she sounds kinda cute and I am lonely...her photo looks alright.

sounds fine, just be very careful about giving anything away, dont attach yourself or take it seriously.... make it possible that if 1thing goes wrong, you can be outa there and never have anything to do with again. (ie. false names, secure computer, dont tell anyone, dont say you know anyone)
I've never done it, but I've known many who have. The results, as you'd expect from any initial dating/interaction, are mixed...some work out brilliantly, some are disasters. If it ain't working out, you can always end it. I know one couple that met and parted company after less than a minute.
