I think it should probably be the lacrosse guy that jumped on and started pounding charlie jenkins during a huge brawl that erupted when a lacrosse ball hit one of the runners during a workout. or maybe his coach the next day screaming at the top of his lungs "DID YOU KNOW THAT WAS AN OLYMPIAN? DO YOU EVEN UNDERSTAND WHAT THAT MEANS???" Really I just wish someone had a video of the whole affair. And its funny to hear about one of the "O'Sullivan boys" being in a dude's class... "Yeah, there were two of them, the one that was good, and the one that never turned anything in..."
I guess the tradition continues down on the main line. It's good to read the stories of old and reminisce the stories of new.
What did Paige steal from Eckmann? I heard they gave Paige a sweet way out by redshirting him for an "injury?" when he really was on disciplinary probation. Doesn't Eckmann's kid go to Nova and post here? Didn't Greg Eckmann fall of a roof and break his arms? Maybe Paige pushed him off to get even?
In a little known piece of trivia(but I am sure old timers know )Dave Patrick won Olympic Trials 1500 at Sea Level in 1968?
There were two trials that year.
Sort of got shafted out of Olympic birth after Marty Liquori also Q'ed at Altitude in Reno?
Dave at one time also held World Indoor 880 record I believe.
Trials were not in Reno they were at Lake Tahoe The track was in the middle of nowhere then donated to the local HS.
Didnt Patrick get shafted by Ryan..wasnt the story something like Ryan didnt qualify but was given 2nd chance??..I'm sure I'll get corrected
Hard question:
Maree has virtually all the best times: faster than Liquori, Coghlan and all the rest at 1500/mile and 5000, with a world record at 1500. But, Maree did not race well in big races: no olympic medals and no world championships.
Coghlan has much to recommend: two 4th places (1500 and 5000) at the Olympics, a world championship at 5000 in 1983, a world record in the indoor mile, first man sub 3:50 indoors, only 40+ year old to go sub 4:00.
Delany, of course, has an Olympic gold in 1500, which is hard to trump, and a world record in the indoor mile.
Marcus O'Sullivan won three indoor world chamionships at 1500, a world record, and has recorded 100 sub-4:00 miles.
Liquori was a 2-time American record holder at 5000, an American record holder at 2 miles, and was ranked #1 in the world at both 1500/mile and 5000, but has no world records, no world championships, and no olympic medals.
If forced to choose: Eamonn Coghlan
On women's side, IMHO it comes down to two:
Sonia O'Sullivan: multiple world championships (5000 and XC), several #1 world rankings, world records, and an Olympic Silver at 5000.
Vicki Huber: American collegiate record in the mile, 2 olympic teams, most of the best times in school history at her distances.
Others of note: Jen Rhines, Carrie Tollefson.
If forced to choose: Sonia O'Sullivan
I think your all forgeting somebody.....
JASON JUBUT!!!!!!!!!
