Why do you say he "wasted his talent?" Maybe he's only now recognizing it. Kiwis John Campbell and Jack Foster (also started running at age 33, though a former cyclist) ran 2:11 in their early 40s, and Britain's Priscilla Welch was an Olympian at 42. Let's see how much faster Way can get and if he can grab a spot for Rio. If he does end up running 2:11-2:12 or make an Olympic team, can you really legitimately say he wasted his talent? How many Brits have run faster in recent years?
Actually Welch was 6th at the LA Olympics in her late 30s after starting running at age 35, but did win NYC at 42 and also ran 2:26 in London at age 42.
... and the UK's Joyce Smith, age 46, was just 5 places behind Welch in LA.
Not to mention genetic talent. The guy ran just over 3:00 as an untrained fatass.

He may still run 2:11-12 but you would acknowledge that he could have run faster in his 20s or 30s on the same program, right?
2:15 at 40 on its own is incredible enough, but with that backstory, you couldn't write that in fiction.

If he runs 2:11-2:12, then, no, we have no way of determining he would've been faster at any age. Over 5,000 or 10,000, it's a different story. Priscilla Welch's story is similar, though she was even better in relative terms.

What's even more impressive is that two weeks after London he ran the UK 100K championships and won in 6:19. That's about 6:09 minutes per mile pace for 62.1 miles.
