Being charged with 2nd degree murder. Hopefully the charge is not an over reach and causes the verdict to come back not guilty.

From the article:
"The case against Lucaj and Quagliata could be a first-of-its-kind in Michigan.
In her more than 25-year legal career, Cooley Law School professor Tonya Krause-Phelan said she has never heard of case where someone in Michigan has been charged with murder for the actions of their dog."
That is not a good sign. They stand of chance of walking away from this.

Don't know if the murder charge will stick, but it seems like it should be pretty straight forward to convict them on the "possession of a dangerous animal causing death, which qualifies for up to 15 years in prison."
Attorneys in the audience - any chance they get deported before they're tried?
Years ago I had a dog come at me. I was running with shirt off, though it was in my hand. As the dog came at me, I held the shirt out between both hands, at a distance from my body. This gave the dog something to latch onto. When he grabbed it and started pulling/biting, I quickly twisted my hands around, wrapping it around his neck. I pulled up and to the side very quickly, and snapped the dogs neck. I left it dead where it came at me, in my neighbor's front yard.

I'll remember that. Hard core!

You're my hero. Post of the day

To you guys carrying the ASP batons--I am blown away these are illegal in some states.
I looked into getting a telescopic baton to carry on my person because I work in a very dangerous area, and it took me about 5 minutes of googling to discover they are apparently illegal here in CA.
WTH?? I can't carry a stick for self-defense???
All the sites I looked at (including the one linked earlier in this thread to ASP) wouldn't let me buy one without a police ID.
I am truly boggled that it is legal for a citizen to own and use firearms, but not glorified sticks.
Why not just buy a 1" wooden dowel and cut an 18" length? For dogs (and 99% of potentially dangerous people) you would never need anything more.

Or as TR used to say, "Run softly and carry a big stick."

sickening... :-(
I hope the owners go to prison for a long time.
Yes. Though when someone that is convicted of a crime like this and is facing deportation...do they make them serve the sentence and then deport them, or just deport them right away to not pay the tab of housing them?
I also wonder which Texas location the seven puppies were sent by the rescue league? Do you think they were sent that far to hide their background/upbringing/breeding history? The people who live where these dogs end up, and of course the new owners, have a right to know their past and what kind of parents they come from.
Also, what about the Metamora area animal control and local authorities and the prosecutor that let this get this far after knowing of the problems with these dogs over several previous years? Yes, the owners were to blame, but there were others who didn’t do their jobs, IMHO.

.
From another article on the case:
Under Michigan law, a person may be charged with involuntary manslaughter if he or she owns a dog involved in a fatal attack on a human. In 2008, a Livingston County woman was sentenced to 3½ years in prison after her American bulldogs mauled to death a neighbor man and a woman who was jogging along the road.

I half expected them to already be deported, but this article never even mentions that...
