Led Zeppelin's Dazed and Confused is so different to the original that it's hard to compare them:

the cover version
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-69iB2oVM0oHow has nobody yet mentioned Judas Priest's cover of Fleetwood Mac's "The Green Manalishi (With The Two Pronged Crown)"?
Or any of the 60s tunes the Ramones covered, like:

Not actually the rest of the story. Rick Derringer debunks that story directly. The identity of "Sloopy" is unknown. It was written by a kid in St Louis, who sold it to a hustler named Burt Berns, who took credit from writing the song.

Incidentally the Battle of Evermore is the only recording by Led Zeppelin that included a guest vocalist.
Just for fun.
Original by Prince
What? Nobody nominated William Shatner's cover of "Rocket Man" by Elton John & Bernie Taupin?

i absolutely love that version!
But damn, the original is kick @ss in it's own right.
Hey, it just seems that with the best of these,, the originals were good enough to get atention and the covers were a different take- not necessarily better, just different.
Just gotta say - Simon and Garfunkel hit a f'g grand slam with that song and i don't care who hit it further. Both were right out of the park.
Thanks for an excuse to cue up both of these.
Jeff healy - while my guitar gently weeps
Aerosmith - Helter skelter
Jeff Buckley - hallelujah
Jimi Hendrix - all along the watchtower
Too lazy to go through the entire list. Did anyone mention Crazy by Patsy Cline? (Willie Nelson original)

Yes, and they linked to a rare live version that was particularly good.
