Updated Projections:
St Olaf: 1, 2, 4, 6, 7 20 (8/31: 18) (8/28: 24)
8/31 Update: Jake Brown is returning. With the injury news for Matt Berens, St. Olaf will have a great chance to sweep at MIAC.
9/14 Update: Calvin Lehn has suffered a long term injury and may struggle to make an impact at MIAC.
St. Thomas: 5,10,17,19,37 88 (9/7:89)
Carleton: 3,8,14,29,34 88 (9/7: 92)
9/7 Update: Carleton opened their season Friday night at the Augustana Twilight Invite, which featured DI, DII, DIII, and NAIA schools. Hart Hornor finished fourth, three seconds behind a Nebraska runner who placed 62nd at Big Ten’s last year, and 16 seconds ahead of a South Dakota runner who placed 21st at regionals in 2013. If he stays healthy, he could disrupt Olaf’s top three. Jonah Barry did not race, a worrying sign considering his past injuries. Ben Withboe also did not race. Freshman Jerry Cook-Gallardo was #2, and will get a bump in the rankings. The rest of the team will maintain their rankings until the first 8k.
9/14 Update: The Knights ran their first 8k at Les Duke, which seems to be a quick course based on past years. Hornor finished 2nd (25:06), and the team got good races from Thor Laack-Veeder (26:34) and Walt Edstrom (26:35) The four and five runners were a ways back (Noah Laack-Veeder: 27:35, Evan Olawsky: 27:44), which will be an issue if Carleton’s missing runners are out long term. Not present for the Knights was Jonah Barry, Jerry Cook-Gallardo, and Ben Withboe. Also of note is Joe Haase, who broke 26:30 last year, has struggled in the team’s first two races. He finished in 27:55.
St. John’s: 16,21,25,30,41 133 (9/7: 102)
9/14 Update: The Johnies opened at the Luther 4-Mile, finishing second behind Central (Iowa) and ahead of Hamline (By 5 Points) and Luther. Feichtinger front ran, and the team got their two through five runners in within 15 seconds of each other.
Macalester: 12,26,28,32,38 136 (9/7: 137)
Hamline: 13,18,24,42,45 142 (9/7: 140)
9/14 Update: The Pipers ran very well at the Luther All-American Invitational. They beat Luther and finished just five points behind St. John’s. Nathan Rock led the way, with Ryan Peterson and Chris Gill close behind. James Logan and Andy Magnuson rounded out the scoring for the Pipers. They will run their first 8k at Griak in two weeks’ time.
Gustavus: 20,27,36,54,57 200 (9/7: 195)
Concordia Moorhead: 22,30,33,53,61 202 (Sept 7: 217) (Aug 31: 256)
8/31 Update: It appears Concordia’s #1 runner from last year, Ryan Sederquist was not actually a senior and will be back for the Cobbers. He was their #2 runner (16:44) at a 5k duel against Valley City State. Last year’s #3 runner Carl Wahlin put in a good show, running 16:30 to win the race. Matt Lillehaugen did not race, which could be a problem for Concordia seeing as their #4 runner was two minutes behind Wahlin, which could easily be three minutes in an 8k.
9/7 Update: The Cobbers ran at the Augustana Twilight on Friday, and Wahlin led the team once again, with Ryan Sederquist close behind. Lillehaugen was not racing again.
9/14 Update: Cobbers were at the MSUM Invitational on Friday night, placing 4th out of 6 teams on the lightning fast course. Carl Wahlin ran 25:36, and Ryan Sederquist also broke 26, running 25:54. Three and Four were freshman Brendan Johnson (27:38) and Erik Larson (28:16). Senior Aaron Larking rounded out the top five with a 28:41. No Lillehaugen again, and he was mentioned in an interview with Wahlin but his status in unclear.
St. Mary’s: 9,23,52,58,62 204
9/7 Update: At the SMU Alumni Open, Aaron Haley stole the show, winning by 57 seconds. Winona State’s top four made up spots two through five in the race, and they all finished within a second, so it’s hard to say how impressive the win is, especially since race distance is not included in the results.
Augsburg: 11,15,56,60,65 207 (Sept 7: 226)
9/14 Update: The Auggies made their 8k debut on the 13th at the River Falls Invitational, a fast, flat course. Salan and Mohamed finished 12th and 13th in the race, running 26:31, and 26:45 respectively. They both looks capable of top 20’s at MIAC. After that, there was a massive gap to #3, as Numbers 3-5 ran 27:50, 28:06, and 28:32.
Bethel: 41,50,56,73,74 294 (9/7: 321) (Aug 27: 252)
8/31 Update: According to the MIAC Athletics preview, Berens will be sitting the season out with his injury, dire news that will likely see Bethel finish last in the MIAC.
9/14 Update: The Knights ran their first 8k at the Les Duke Invitationa (Fast Course), finishing 6th out of 13. At #1 and #2 were Tom Ritter (26:42) and Conner Haugen (27:00). Harrison Hitt has stepped up as the #3 man, running 27:32. Numbers four and five ran 29:25, which will not be good enough at MIAC.
