Does it matter? There is nothing special about a three hour Marathon. Most runners that do it are super SCRAWNY. Their girlfriend make jokes about them, if they had any girlfriends (lol).
Bottomline: The Marathon is a stupid event.

I have no experience in this, so I cannot help in that aspect. But I would like to give my encouragement. Don't listen to losers like the crossfit moron above me, who is just arrogant because he weighs 20 more pounds than you and runs a minute per mile slower

Every other long run with a significant chunk of it at marathon race pace. I'm talking 8-12 miles at a time. Start slow, do the last 70-80% at MRP.
Tempo runs at 15K to half marathon race pace.
Interval work-outs at no faster than 5K race pace. Minimum interval length of 400m. Introduce these later on in your training (2.5 months out)
Lots of miles (60-70mpw MINIMUM)
Key: Take your easy runs as easy as you need. If you burn yourself out on recovery days you're toast. I'm talking 9 minute miles if that's what you need.
Marathon training is all about VOLUME and VOLUME OF RUNNING AT MARATHON RACE PACE. Elites do their "tempo runs" at marathon race pace.
I am a 2:55 - 3 hour guy and agree with the tips above from piano man. The long runs with some marathon pace are great runs. Just remember, it isn't about a single workout but what you string together day after day over a few months time.
