Athlete Selection Procedures
IAAF Entry Rules
• Events to be contested for both men and women will be: 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400m, 4x800m and 4x1500m relays. The 4x100m, 4x200m and 4x400m relays will have both a qualifying round and a final, whereas the 4x800m and 4x1500m relays will be finals (only).
• USA Track & Field may enter one team per event, with a maximum 6 individuals on the roster for each team. Any four athletes among those entered on the roster for that relay, may then be used in the composition of the team for the first round.
• Final entries are due into the IAAF on Monday May 12, 2014.
USATF Selection Criteria - The following criteria will be used to select athletes for the 2014 IAAF World Relay Championships.
1. For the 4x100m and 4x400m relays, a pool of athletes will be developed from among those athletes who were members of the 2012 Olympic Games relay pools, the 2013 IAAF World Championships relay pools and the top two place finishers in the 60m and 400m events at the 2014 U.S. Indoor Championships. If needed to develop a strong pool, the selection committee may choose athletes who are top-ranked performers from the 2014, to date, U.S. comprehensive performance ranking list and those who were top ranked performers from the 2013 U.S. outdoor ranking list.
2. For the 4x200m relay, a pool of athletes will be developed from among those athletes who were members of the U.S. Team in the 200m at the 2013 World Championships and/or 2012 Olympic Games and those who are top-ranked performers from the 2014, to date, U.S. comprehensive performance ranking list and those who were top ranked performers from the 2013 U.S. outdoor performance list.
3. Athletes selected for the 4x100m, 4x200m and 4x400m relay pools will be required to show their fitness for world-level competition by having actively competed in relay and open/invitational meets in the spring, as well as possible competition at the 2014 Mt. SAC Relays and/or USA vs. World at the Penn Relays.
4. For the 4x800 and 4x1500 meter, a pool of athletes will be developed from among those athletes who were members of the 2012 Olympic Games and the 2013 World Championships teams in the 800 meters and 1500 meter events and the top two place finishers in the 800m and 1500m events at the 2014 U.S. Indoor Championships. If needed to develop a strong pool, the selection committee may choose athletes who are top-ranked performers in the 800 meters and 1500 meters from the 2014, to date, U.S. comprehensive performance ranking list and top ranked performers from the 2013 U.S. outdoor performance list.
5. Athletes selected for the 4x800m and 4x1500m relay pools will be required to show fitness by having actively competed in relay and open/invitational meets in the spring, as well as possible competition at the 2014 USA vs. World at the Penn Relays.
6. The Athlete Selection Committee for the 2014 World Relay Championships will be composed of the coach(es) for that relay, USATF’s High Performance Division Chair, USATF’s Athlete Advisory Committee Chair, one non-competing sprint athlete representative with world-major relay experience and one non-competing distance athlete representative with world-major competitive experience. USATF’s High Performance Division Chair will Chair all meetings of the Selection Committee. The sprint and distance athlete representatives will vote only on selection matters for their specific discipline. USATF’s Director, High Performance Programs, may participate with voice but no vote on all Committee deliberations. The Committee will review results from the required meets, as well as the 2014 and 2013 performance ranking lists, in order to identify individuals who are considered to give the USA the best chance to reach the podium at the World Relay Championships.
7. Athletes and their agents will be notified of the athlete’s selection for each relay pool in mid-March, 2014. Selected athletes will be required to accept or decline their position in the relay pool no later than Friday, March 28, 2014.
8. Final selection of the athletes to be members of each relay pool for the World Relay Championships will be occur no later than Wednesday, April 30, 2014.
9. Athletes and coaches selected for the 4x100 and 4x200 relay pools will be required to attend a relay training camp in the Bahamas, with travel to the Bahamas being on Monday, May 19th and relay practice sessions being held on Tuesday through Thursday, May 20th to 22nd. Athletes and coaches in the 4x400m, 4x800m and 4x1500m relay pools will travel to the Bahamas on Wednesday, May 21st.
10. In the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 meter relays, trial rounds will be run on Saturday, May 24th. The finals in these three relays, as well as the finals in the 4x800 and 4x1500 meter relays will be run on Sunday, May 25th.
11. All members of the U.S. Team delegation will depart from the Bahamas on Monday, May 26th
