I laughed at the video. It was amusing with the awkward moments of silence following "jokes".

You shouldn't have to Google background info on a show for it to be interesting.
I stopped watching shows with laughtracks years ago. Basically I do not watch any of the half hour prime time shows. A couple of years ago a friend landed a solid role, a season long story arc, on one of them. I was incredibly happy for my friend, she made good money but I could not stand the show and couldn't force myself to watch that vacuous, inane, insipidly vapid undertaking.
Don't get my started on the police procedural shows, many of which I like btw, where the ponytailed smokin' hot cop in expensive, fashionable, trendy clothes and 4 inch spike heels jumps into the number three slot on a SWAT entrance team sans helmet and meaningful body armor and then spouts meaningless orders to this presumably well trained and much practiced unit...

That is why I said the show is not for the "average" person. The "average" person does not do research so does not get all the benefits out of watching TV. For example ther HBO show "Californication" is based a lot on the life of Charles Bukowski one of the best writers EVER. Read his books and you will get a better perspective of what the show is about. The fact is a lot of TV is far, far better written than most movies nowadays. Most movies are written for the international market so many people who see it cannot even understand english. This fact makes the BBT look like Shakespeare by comparison.

Wrong. The Bing Bang Theory is ABSOLUTELY for the "average" person. The jokes are barely advanced enough that the average person feels smart if they "get" them, and that's why it's entertaining for a while. People well-versed in science groan or shake their head in disgust at every joke in the show.
Agreed. The geek humor is actually pretty weak. XKCD has excellent geek humor.

I think average, and below average, people like to watch because it makes them 'appear' smart.

I think this show's humor meets the following analogy:
Color Run:Olympic Trials::BBT's "Smart Humor":Smart people's "smart humor"
It's somewhat related to smart topics, but it's simplified for the masses. Most smart people have a hard time taken it seriously.
Best show with a laugh track that SHOULD NEVER have had a laugh track - M*A*S*H

If you're trolling, well done.
If not, I don't think you know how to enjoy television.
What you refer to as "research" is little more than looking up fun facts and watching a show with these facts in mind. Good shows don't need random trivia to make them enjoyable. The form and content of the shows alone are what make them quality shows. The sad thing about Big Bang Theory is that it relies almost totally on fun facts to attract an audience that finds this tactic clever.
If you want to watch a good show, watch "Seinfeld," "Arrested Development," something of that caliber.
If you want real smart humor, check out xkcd.com.
If you want to feel smart without actually being smart, continue looking up trivia and watching Big Bang Theory.
I agree that Seinfeld is one of the best shows ever no doubt about it and XKCD may be far smarter than Big Bang Theory and also be far smarter than me. What makes the Big Bang theory funny to me is the scene where Sheldon and Amy are on their first date with Penny along because Sheldon has never been on a date before. In order to have something to talk about Sheldon figures out how many men Penny has slept with. After sheldon has come up with a figure of 32 guys Amy asks if Penny is a "slut". I find that funny.

So, I am curious as to what you consider to be a good comedy or show. Please enlighten us since you seem to know better.
I enjoy BBT very much. Nothing I read on a message board is going to change that, but thanks for voicing your opinion.
Geez Louise, it's just dumb laughs. If you want high art read the Paris Review or whatever.

Agreed.

Um, ever heard of The Simpsons?

Do you recall the episode without the laugh track. It was considered groundbreaking for several reasons.
It has to be the querest show since CHIPS.

I've read and enjoyed Bukowski. Californincation still sucks. Stop liking things that suck.
I actually feel slightly embarrassed for you
I walked out on 'Pulp Fiction ' .
The show Numb3rs was much better.
