What is the root cause of growing depression amongst young adults nowadays? Unrealistic expectations of life? Parental issues? Pressures of social media?

Their parents did a piss-poor job of preparing them for adulthood.
I also agree that too many parents try to shield their kids from normal conflicts and disappointments which tends to create less resilient kids.
Because they are told they are. They are raised to believe that they will have fabulous, glamorous jobs, and that life is easy.
They need more sex.
What kind of young adults are you talking about. If you're talking about people with lives actually aren't that great then some of the explanations above could make sense. But feeling entitled to an amazing life doesn't cause depression if you have a life that actually is great. What about those people?
I am a young adult who is sometimes depressed. My parents did a great job and I have great opportunities and work hard.
Because of Obamacare. It's enough to depress anyone.
not sure now is any different than the past, but really - since the current 30 year old graduated college...it's been a roller coaster.
tech bust, 9/11, global war on terror, housing bust, bush, obama, the rise of radiohead, iraq, afghanistan, student loan crisis, occupy...
mucho crapola has happened and that's all they know as adults.
I graduated college in 1990 and lived through a year of recession...but my teens and 20s were generally boom times - forming my world view.
imagine if all you knew was the post 911 crash crash world...

Is there really growing depression about young adults? Besides all the young folks that like to complain on these message boards?
I don't know. But among my peer group, we were taught to believe that we would have these exciting, challenging careers solving the world's problems. And material possessions would make us happy. But that is far from the truth.
Once you power through the disappointment and discover what truly makes life worth living, most of us have turned out alright.
Plus people do not spend enough time outdoors. We are animals, after all.
We were raised with the expectation that we had control over our destiny, that it was never too late to pursue a dream, and that the working world and life in general would be fun and exciting. Many of us were also raised with religious ideals -- for example, the idea that an all-loving, all-powerful being has placed on Earth a perfectly compatible partner that we'll meet in our lifetime.
We get depressed when we get to the age where we realize that those expectations and ideals were complete bogus. Life is an evolutionary sorting algorithm that separates the losers from the winners. There's no omnipotent being who cares about us. There are few men and women who can experience anything resembling a lasting romance. And by the time you're 24 years old, your control over the outcome of your life is severely limited.
Lack of opportunity since Obama showed up.

That was the idea behind the Send Everyone to College movement: we'll make everyone white-collar workers. They'll sit in classrooms with their laptops in Gothic-style buildings and then go work as engineers on Obama's new green energy initiative, or whatever.
The truth is that the world only needs so many doctors, lawyers and engineers, and most people don't have enough academic ability to hack it in those careers anyhow. But since we flooded the market with young adults expecting white-collar jobs, the competition for white-collar jobs has gotten fierce and the wages have gone down. Funnily enough, the blue-collar jobs that liberals, for some reason, believe young people should be discouraged from pursuing, will become in-demand as soon as the Baby Boomers retire in droves. How many people in my generation know how to do the work that an electrician does? Hardly any, which is why those who do will make bank due to scarcity of their skill.

Actually I'd say this is true. Winners & losers are made early on in life. Very few people turn things around in adulthood, there are some exceptions but not many.
virtually nothing in this post is true.
if it is, explain the massive successes among the asian immigrants.
it's a matter of how hard a person is willing to work. If you want things handed to you...not gonna happen much.
if you are willing to work hard and learn a trade, you will be fine 90% of the time.
Q: Why do you think so many immigrants come here and succeed? They know they can compete against the lazy natives who, despite perfect english and college degrees, feel that their fate is sealed by age 24.
Tell your defeatist theories to a FOB Nigerian or Indian - they will not quite know what to say.

not really if you made some mistakes before college. For instance, I was a first gen college student whose parents did not give a dime to toward school. I didn't know any better so I took out loans to go to college in a liberal arts degree then graduate school in education. These mistakes and the circumstances of my birth placed a heavy debt burden on me and now I have to delay major life points because of them. I'm 28, single, don't own a car, and live in a crappy apartment. I have very little in my bank account and work for entitled kids at a college. If only I studied chemical engineering or computer science I might have already received my ROI. Anyway, my fate is 50% sealed. At least that's how it feels. I must climb the management ladder if I want to have a decent living in a few decades.
Because adulthood is depression and they're not used to it.
yes. If you make terrible decisions you will have to pay for them.
the solution to the problem is....

Your defeatist mindset and lack of perspective sure does not help. I was going to pawn your downbeat assertions in a separate thread, but your response got deleted before I could respond.
If evolutionary sorting mechanism still worked, all the fata$$es would not be running around this country. Or I should say, scooting around the grocery store aisles. We have replaced natural selection with artificial survival.

I didn't know any better
You didn't know any better than to go into debt bigtime? lack of common sense is a problem, yes.
And what are you doing to get out of debt? Are you working two or three jobs? are you living on rice and beans? Did you cancel cable and any data plans?
Cause that's what immigrants do - if they get in a hole they dig really hard to get out. Yuo are not special because you were born here. If you are white and speak english and have a college degree...you have a huge lead. But if you made poor decisions yuo will have to work hard to get out of it. Not sure what to tell you.
