For his accomplishments, he easily gets the most disproportionate praise.
But he really was special. If he trained through 30, I think we'd have an American worth talking about at least as much as he is.

I hate to break it to you buddy. No runner in America with the exception of Jesse Owens, and the possible exception of Carl Owens has ever been a superstar with the general public. The vast majority (90%+) of the public had no idea who Prefontaine was when he was alive, and have no idea who Prefontaine is now.
Running is and has been a niche sport. Outside of the 100meters, the public doesn't care. And they only care about the 100 every 4 years at most.
