Speaking of "Where would someone ever use algebra?", a number of years ago I refinanced my mortgage. The young lady who took my application explained that she had a 4-year Business degree, and that she had spent 8 years buying and selling securities for a local bank.
At the time I wanted to refinance $52,000, and this particular bank would loan 75% of the value of a home. The question was, how much did my home have to be worth? Of course, this lady took out her calculator, and began to search for a solution to this quite elementary problem. She began by figuring 75% of $80,000 is $60,000 (too high). 75% of $60,000 is $45,000 (too low). And so on. She never did come up with an exact answer, which is $52,000/0.75 = $69,333.33 (to the nearest penny). And this lady had been taking applications for 1 1/2 years!
Could this lady have used algebra? Of course. She not only could have saved herself a great deal of time, but appeared much more intelligent as well.
