Often, memories are false. Memory can change through suggestion. So, I don't trust this. Innocent until proven guilty. A person's reputation shouldn't be destroyed by a letter.
What about all the other stuff beyond the once incident in the attic? Sleeping in bed with her in his underwear? Putting his thumb in her thumb in her mouth? Were these repeated incidents just put in her head?
It's easy to feed one memory into a kid's head. But lots of memories? That's a real stretch.

So what? Doesn't mean that he made any moves or was even interested in her before she was legally available. You're assuming too much.
Just think for a minute. He lives with this girl for many years as a father figure before she reaches the legal age of consent. Do you think a man wakes up one day after years as a stepfather and says "Wow, I really love this 19-year-old and want to spend the rest of my life with her." Is that the sort of thing that happens with stepfathers? Switching from a father figure to a lover? What is that?
Are you familiar with his movie "Manhattan"? It portrays him as a divorced 42-year-old that starts dating a 17-year-old. A bit of foreshadowing, maybe?
