I think I get what you are saying - he chose to be here. He didn't choose to be from Kenya. But isn't there something to blind, dumb luck and actually just being born in a place and staying there?

Wouln't he be more from the USA if he actually was from this country instead of choosing to live here once he realized he could enjoy our great wealth?

If the US declines in 50 years as one poster currently fears, who's to say Lagat isn't going to move to another country that offers him more cash like he did by moving here?

Yes, I guess all of our immigrants came her at one point either for cash or freedom but in my mind it's no necessarily a sign of greater patriotism that you chose to live her. For some, it very well may be. They wouldn't live anywhere else. But for many immigrants, it could vary well be a sign of the opposite - they just go where the money is.

I don't think anyone is saying Lagat's not an American. He just wasn't 'Born in the USA'

That's not the same thing. If they had played "Born in The UK" Cram would have likely contested that.

1. they didn't play a song after his victory titled "Born in the UK'

2. Mo has been a British citizen since birth by virtue of his father being a British citizen

He didn't make a criticism of Lagat. He just pointed out the irony that the song wasn't actually applicable to Lagat. Had they not put on the song, Cram would have never said anything about it (just as he hadn't about Farah).
