The folks on this list are first class, but they're all mid-d. I guess people find reasons to hate on Lagat and Hall too, so it shouldn't be surprising that Rupp can't win them over either. Makes me shake my head though. What must a runner do/say/look like to win these people over? It's an incredible standard.
Third time he's broken the record in the last seven years - 13:18, 13:11 & now 13:01. Very impressive.

So there have only been six elite runners ever?

You got it bub.
Zat0pek wrote:First, who says he's stayed in Oregon the whole time? I have no idea if he's traveled to train or not but it's certainly possible
i'm sure we wouda heard about it if he'd gone to florida for sprint training
Second, you can easily duplicate heat training by over dressing during a workout in 50 degree temps
is this a joke ???
with the amount of layers needed, you'll be hardly able to run let alone sprint
Third, it's easily possible to reach maximum fitness without "hot weather sprint training."
not for sprints it isn't
Fourth, the fact that outdoor WRs are consistently superior to indoor is a function of the calendar, not the venue. Yes, tighter turns are a bit slower, but the surfaces are/can be just as fast. Further, there is zero wind/sun and you can control for perfect temps. Outdoor times are superior because that's the main season that everyone peaks for. Countless guys either skip indoor entirely or simply train through it without even attempting to peak. Basically, indoor is to outdoor as conference is to nationals in terms of the level of competition. Not only does that reduce the pool of people prepared to run fast, it also reduces the level of competition for people who are prepared to run fast
this adds nothing
Fifth, the fact that most guys' outdoor PRs at 5,000 meters might generally be 10-20 seconds faster than indoors means nothing in terms a particular athlete on a particular day. Completely possible for a guy in peak condition to run a time indoors that is equal or even superior to what he would do outdoors in the same shape. Some guys even have all-time indoor PRs faster than outdoors (see Coghlan, for example).
statistics show you haven't a leg to stand on
the 6 guys who have all gone < 13i have an average of 10s faster outdoor pb & ALL have gone < 12'50, slowest being longosiwa at 12'49
any semblance of decent pacing & rupp wouda been well below 13'00 meaning he couda expect substantially below 12'50 outdoors from previous barrier busters
Ventolin, one thing to remember is that for an indoor track this one in Boston is exceptionally fast for a 200m banked track.
There must be some data on it. Just anecdotally, I ran my fastest time for 5k there, which was faster than my outdoor PR. I know a lot of guys that were the same.
I was shocked and super impressed by Rupp's run. I think this 13.01 is not equivalent to sub 12:50 but because it came so early in the season it means he could be in 12:50 shape when he peaks for indoor worlds and maybe 12:40s shape when he peaks outdoors.
He is still 8 weeks out from his planned indoor season peak. So at best he's a little over half way through this training cycle and probably hasn't been training speed for very long.

How does this even make sense

bekele has only run indoors a few times remember he lost lap count cause he never ran indoor
most of these countries don't have toilets indoors
rupp has been capable of sub 12:50 for several years now.
last year rupp had a B to B+ game going which is good for 5th in the world or thereabouts.
now rupp is on his A game, a 1301 without tapering and at sub optimal pacing.
the trick is to bring it later on in the season. last year for whatever reason they did not get it quite right.
rest assured that salazar will adjust the schedule and probably back off a little bit with the indoor schedule and maybe get rupp a little fresher earlier.
No scholarship limits anymore! (NCAA Track and Field inequality is going to get way worse, right?)
