Once I was running on an old trail outside Eugene and the weather was fine and I was having a good time all by myself, thank you very much. I was a couple hours into my run and saw what looked like Andrew Wheating trotting ahead of my with his hands stuck in his pockets. I thought, "That guy IS weird, but why would he run with his hands in his pockets?"
I kept at my run and slowly crept up on Andrew only to realize that he wasn't as far off as I initially thought he was. In fact, he was much much closer than he should have been for how tall he is. So now I was really confused--the closer I got the smaller Andrew became. "Am I going bonkers?" I wondered.
No I was not going bonkers, Andrew kept getting smaller--I had GONE bonkers and fallen down a rabbit hole!
My mind worked furiously trying to riddle this out. I got closer and closer and Andrew got smaller and smaller. All the while trotting down the trail with his hands in his pockets.
Eventually I was right on top of Andrew and could see him clearly. To my horror, Andrew Wheating had turned into a wild turkey!
In my shock I lost my balance and slipped on a stick. The loud crack from the breaking stick caught Andrew's attention and he turned in surprise. Upon seeing me he burst into flight and disappeared into the nearest bunch of shrubbery.
With Andrew fleeing, I stopped and tried to put the events together into some logical order. To make sense of what I just saw. But I am still, years later, struggling to figure out how Andrew Wheating turns into a wild turkey when he takes to running the trails around Eugene in the Summer.
