Phil Stewart wrote a great piece about the Olympic Trials Marathon selection here:

Noteworthy:
-LDR committee unanimously selected Houston
-Siegel wants LA
What comes next? Who knows.

I am curious as to how many Olympic Trials Marathons Max has ever been to? He knows nothing about the sport but will be the only vote that matters. It is sad. For that matter how many marathon trials has Torres participated in? What does he know about the trials marathon. This is why they have committees. A group of people with a great number of years of experience.

The committees vote for their buddies and often who can help them move up and stay in power. They are not all innocent in these processes either. The volunteers should not be holding all the power in a professional sports organization. Regardless of the experiences they have that's ridiculous. We've got store clerks, school teachers and retirees running our governing body. If they're so experienced then they should be in this business professionally. Maybe its time to let the professionals run the professional sport organization? These committees should be run by elite athletes, coaches, and those who are professionally involved in the running industry. Let the volunteers work on an advisory role only.
I couldn't say what Max's motivations are but LA is a higher profile city than Houston. Houston is small time when it comes to media exposure for our sport.
Makes sense except nearly ALL of the events are run by volunteers with the exception of a few staff members from USATF. timing, & TV
Let's start with the officials - none are paid to work the Olympic Trials or USATF Championships.
Want a professional organization, then everyone needs to go Pro
The CEO has to get the most exposure for USATF. The 2016 OTMT is an important event for USATF. Expect the 2020 OT T&F event to be awarded to Los Angeles as well for the same reason which is exposure of our sport to global social media, and global TV broadcasting.
I see Siegel's connection to NASCAR mentioned to support him as a master marketer. NASCAR experienced huge growth for about 20 years and seems like it has tailed off recently. Could his success be a part of being in the right place at the right time? In other words could anyone have reached the same level of success given the growth of the sport?
That article is so petty it's laughable. Max will soon have to face enormous competition for fans and sponsors from the XC/T&F teams of the Power 5 Conferences who are expected to secede from the NCAA this year. If USATF gets swamped by the colleges then we would have less money to do with. Deal with that.

What are you talking about?
College track is not a spectator sport. No one but us gives a **** about college track.

You small town hillbillies! You have been whining and crying for attention for decades and now that we are finally on the verge of making it to the big time for once with the 2016 marathon trials in Hollywood, and now your'e complaining for Houston just because it's a shorter drive from your barn?
What did he do for NASCAR?

Of course this was on Letsrun almost as soon as it happened.
LOL! DR and RW are fanboys, not 'news outlets' you dickwad.

You have no idea what you're talking about. The volunteers sign a conflict of interest waiver every year. Also, the committees consist of people from various backgrounds that have the expertise to make an informed decision. Max is a business man, period. He doesn't have the experience and reach within the distance running world. That's why there ARE committees in place to provide the proper feedback up the chain. If he's not willing to listen, it's all on him if things go awry.
Aren't you tired of being a small time niche sport that nobody in the US cares about? Max made the right call. We need the global exposure that only having major races and meets in LA gives us.

Seriously, you have confidence in a "conflict of interest waiver". You also believe that politicians are honest too, right?
I'm not calling these committee members crooks. I used to be one of them and I remember people looking for events for their own association, funding for their association and events, notoriety, contracts for their buddies timing companies, event related business for their buddies companies, etc... They also want international team coaching/manager positions and officials assignments for championships. I'm just saying its naive to think many don't have self interests. That said many are good meaning people who love the sport. But few of them have the background to make proper decisions for a professional sports organization. That is what USATF is in the position it is in. It's not just about running, it's a business. We need to balance our sports needs with business decisions or we will fail.
The ego's of so many USATF committee members are hurting our sport. The idea that an outsider like Max can't help us is an ego problem. Maybe he isn't the guy, but the track nerds have failed us so lets give him an honest try and some support. If he fails we can always run him out of town like the last guy.

No, he hasn't made a decision. Media is even for either place- don't be fooled. What matters most is the athletes being able to perform at their best. Global exposure? Have you see who wins marathons lately?

You still don't know what you're talking about. I'll leave it at that.
BS. Houston couldn't even get an NFL team without taxpayers bribing the NFL with $2B in free welfare dollars plus $500M/year in tax breaks. Portland and Eugene depends solely on Nike welfare for their meets. The locals in Houston, Porland, nor Eugene cound not pull it off themselves. As soon as Phil Knight is gone that's the end of T&F in the state of Oregon.
