It's akin to a man telling his wife not to bother saving him dinner when he has to work late in the office. It's a gesture of good will that, if used, may lead to hard feelings and resentment.

Thinking that this analysis (or any other) holds for women in general is laughable. People are individuals, folks.
I gave my wife a 10" gift wrapped with a big red bow again. She never complains even though she gets the same gift every year.
Nobody eats fruitcakes they just throw them away
It really does mean she is getting it from someone else. Prob your best friend. Happened to my best friend. True story.

This.
But the secret to getting the bonus Christmas gift is not the amount but the thought. At some point she dropped a hint. If you got it you're in.
I literally told my wife what I want is hot "girlfriend" sex with her dressed up in lingerie. If I want an iPad I'll go get one.
And married guys you know the difference between girlfriend, married and drunk sex so you know what I'm talking about.
It always seems weird to me when adults are going on about christmas gifts. If someone says s/he doesn't want anything, then respect that and don't get anything. This person is, presumably, an adult. He or she can go buy whatever he or she wants.
My wife and I both come from families where the adults don't get christmas/birthday/hallmarkholiday presents. (in my family, the last gift is on the 18th b-day, in my wife's it is on christmas the year you turn 21). After that, you are one of the grown-ups and can go get a job and buy whatever you feel like you want. The end result is that on christmas, we have a family get-together, eat and drink too much and watch the kids open gifts. No pressure, no competition and no hurt feelings. Fantastic.
I'm assuming you are not married.
Get practical gifts like a laptop or a pair of ear rings that have some diamonds, etc.
Women are easy.
Never buy clothes. Ever. Because if you buy in her actual size, she will tell you it's too big, and life sprials downhill from there.

Diamonds are a waste and not practical. Cubic zirconia is the same thing and quite inexpensive.
I never get any gift or card for anyone.

How exactly did you deduce bland and apathetic from this? Do you even know what these words mean?

I wish they would just stop saying it. Because this year, I took them up on it. Didn't work out so well.
They both say it? What's the point of dating a married man if he doesn't give gifts.
What is means is that she is trying to figure out if you got her a gift. You need to figure out if she is the type of person that needs gifts. Some people don't, and if they say no gift, they mean it. Others need gifts from their significant other and if you don't, you are telling her that she is not worthy. So figure that out first.
Honestly I think if anyone says something like that they pretty much deserve to get nthing. It annoys me when people say stuff they dont mean. Having said that, the answer is NO, they don't mean it.

Some do. Some don't.
Honestly, if you think that there is one universal answer that applies to all then you are both retarded and pathetic.
