Mary left this one available. Will anyone go for it this season: Efraimson maybe?

Real question: isn't she still eligible to set high school records?
Depends on who's HS record list you want to call official.

She can't set NFHS records (since she's in eligible to compete for her school) and Track and Field News says they won't consider her a high school runner either. Who else keeps national high school records?

Where did they say this? Not doubting you, I just haven't seen anything either way.
So if some HS girl goes to BU or harvard and in an open race, breaks the rec.--doubtful... it's a good rec-- then T&FN would count it as a HS record? But with Cain they'd say no?
I don't believe that would be the case. She's still a HS/Sr.
cain's 4:04 would split 2:42.x at even pace, so i wonder if she actually split 2:43 or faster. prob not ebcause she kicks well

Source? Never heard this.
On the one hand, she's still enrolled in HS so not sure why they wouldn't count. On the other, i imagine Allyson Felix doesn't hold NCAA records through USC since she went pro.
Mary Cain will get 1000m record in January 2014. I think Mary is also capable in running close to the American record which is 2:34.19 by Jen Toomey.

I've thought about that too, but isn't it different in that the NCAA is a league, whereas there isn't an equivalent high school league. Felix wasn't an NCAA athlete, whereas Cain is a high school student.
Most, if not all states, do not allow students to participate in athletics if they have ever been paid or received compensation. This is the case with Mary. She is ineligible to run in high school so I am not sure if anyone can count it as a high school record. Personally, I tend to agree. She has way more advantages over a normal high school student. Even the best private schools don't have half of what Nike provides her. Give her the age record, no debate on that. If she forwent college I doubt her main concerns are with high school records. She better be thinking world records if she gave up the best four years of her life, and free education.
If she has the 800 and 1500/mile, why does anyone care about the 1000?

Didn't she graduate early (as in, she's no longer enrolled in HS)?

Because they do. Webb went for it and got it, like Cain he didn't have the indoor 800 record, although he probably could have.
Robby Andrews had the 800 but also went for the 1k. The 1k is popular indoors for record attempts even at the college and pro level, it's a good over/under distant event for the 800/1500 types.
Very Early season, but Records in jeopardy @ BU
1000m AJR/WJR - 2:40.1 Diana Richburg (US) New London, Connecticut 12/7/82
1000m AR -2:34.19 Jen Toomey (Nike) Birmingham, England 2/20/04
Mile AJR - 4:28.25 Mary Cain (Bronxville, New York) New York, New York 2/16/13
Mile WJR - 4:24.10 Kalkaden Gezahegn (Ethiopia) Birmingham, England 2/20/10
Mile AR - 4:20.5 Mary Slaney (Athletics West) San Diego, California 2/19/82
Mary Cain has not run for her HS for years. She's been a pro for years. She is not considered for any school, regional or state records. Some national records depending who keeps them.
Perhaps a better classification is junior records. She is not a HS runner.
The editor said it in response to a letter concerning Mary and HS records. I should know, my father pulled it out to end an argument over who would count any records for her this year. Check the letters section in this months TnF NEWS.whatthewhatthewhat wrote:

I think she's put high school in the rear view mirror.
The 31 years old American Junior Record is 2:40.1 (according to USATF). Still, challenging for Mary Cain: by rule of thumb this equates to 2:01.3 800m, or, 4:09.8 1500m.
The American Record indoors is 2:34.19. She'll get this some day, but she'd have to show startling improvement to do it this winter.
The other record she might be looking at is Mary Decker's indoor AJR 2:01.8 in the 800m. Doable, but not a piece of cake either.
