I am a junior in high school and this is going to be my first year running track. Freshman and sophomore year I ran cross country and in the fall and played soccer in the spring, but now I have finally that I hate myself and will run track in the spring.
I want my main event to be the 800 and I would really like to run 2:05 or below. I ran the 800 in middle school and did fairly well with a 2:18 as my PR. So, my question is: what should I be doing now to help me reach that goal? As of right now, I'm just running mileage (40 mpw, I would usually do more, but I'm not sure if I need to right now) and doing weights. What kind of mileage should I be doing for the 800? I think I need to work on my speed, but all I have done is striders here and there. I'm thinking about incorporating a quick speed workout every Sunday before getting into heavier speed workouts during the season. What would be some good speed workouts to try out?
Hope I can get some advice. Thanks.
