When I first moved to Eugene back in the late eighties, I'd see Henry Rono running at all hours of the day. I'd see him out jogging at 5 am when I did my morning run. I'd see him at 3 out the window of the bus I rode home from work. Then, I'd bump into him at 5:30 when I was out doing my second run. At about this time, he did an interview with, I think, Running Times in which he was quoted as saying his mileage was 30-35 miles per week. Later, when I got to know Henry a little I asked him about this. He said 'no no no, those 'runs' you saw me do were not training - they were to reduce the fat in my stomach. My mileage is only what I do on the track.'
Lydiard's boys famously did 100 miles per week during their endurance phase. But this is only if you didn't count their 'shake-out' runs. Then they were doing 130 or so.
Myself? If I got dressed to run and went out for more than a mile - however the heck I did it, I counted it.
In running, as in many many other things. Your mileage may vary...
