Even though courses vary, all these variables that XC doesn't cover correctly, however the point I'm getting at is on paper the US youth is looking pretty strong, contrary to what people have posted.
I know for a fact that this list stretches beyond five deep too, as NXN champ Kai Wilmot set the course record yesterday and is still not top five time wise for seniors. Other big names that come to mind not in the lists are Eli Krahn(SO), Ben Veatch (SO), Andrew Hunter (SO), Elijah Armstrong (JR), Sukhi Khosla (JR), John Dressel (JR), Grant Fisher (JR), Mike Brannigan (JR), Brent Demarest (SR), Obsa Ali (SR), Blake Haney (SR), Tony Russell (SR), Tal Braude (SR),and Estevan De la Rosa (SR).
The only thing that happens year after year with these kids that show much promise now, and falter later, is either:
a) mileage junkies
b) lose focus
c) go into an unfit program for college
Really long, but thoughts? Who do expect to keep motoring along at the collegiate level like Saarel, Cheserek, McGorty, and Leingang showed their first XC season after being high school seniors the year prior.
