Writing a paper about letsrun message board community

How bout the idea that everyone here shares a common interest?

Also, trolling?

You should mention that there are two kinds of anonymous people.

1) those of us with the big, hairy balls to use registered names

2) the cringing, shit-eating vermin who use unregistered names

Everyone shares a common interest, yes - but god forbid you be deemed a "hobby jogger" because you aren't super fast or serious enough. There is a big divide even though we are all runners with a lot of common interests, like getting over injuries and improving our PRs (yes even us hobby joggers want to get faster).

You couldn't pick a better place to have as a subject for a paper about "vitriol community"

How much talk there is unrelated to sports. How it's not just a place to talk about running, but a place to just shoot the sh*t with other runners. Politics, books, chess, relationship advice, movie recommendations, subtle and nuanced discussions of race relations.

Runners seem to often be wildly eccentric intellectuals, and to have a, I don't know how to put it, a great range of conversational topics, from the high to the low. My runner friends in real life will go from talking about Baroque music or physics to the epic sh*t they took two days ago; you get that sort of vibe here some.

Are other sports blogs like that?

It seems like men make up the majority here, or at least seem to be more vocal. Definitely some sexist pigs giving relationship "advice".

Biggest waste of talent is LetsRun.com. No other community is full of as many with 150+ IQ's, six-figure salaries, and 14:xx 5Ks (a great athletic accomplishment) who still manage to be absolute LOSERS in everyday life. Every time xfitguy says women don't want runners, I'm convinced he's right - not because they find their bodies unattractive, but because who would want to spend time with the delusional men-children of LetsRun? NO ONE, that's who.

LetsRun is world-famous. Authors such as Malcolm Gladwell and David Epstein hang out here. Lots of elite runners do too obviously.

LetsRun played a role in the 2012 Presidential election and the trial of the decade, the Trayvon Martin case.

What is the definition of a troll? I'm new here.

I think one of the deepest issues (tied to the hostility/aggression aforementioned) is a lot of denial, disappointment, and what-if thinking that is created in the anonymous/impersonal interactions we have on this site. Running is an incredibly linear sport; there's no gimmicks to being faster (outside drugs). Once you've run decent times, you've experienced training that punishes you and gives you rewards. From there you have some perspective to see the road to faster times and understand how the 14:30/14:00/13:30 guy got down there.

I think a lot of posters, myself included, find it easy to be aggressive, demeaning, boastful, and possibly lie as they reflect on topics of which they have no real consequences.

Something to chew on.

Don't forget the Boston Bomber photo story. I forget how it played out, but somehow Letsrun posters were involved.

This site's message board has been quoted and referenced in both Sports Illustrated and the New York Times. Not bad.

A lot of people here are thoughtful and fair. That's why I like the group. I spend a lot of time with people that don't run and have their own agendas. I come here t o strip away the bs and discuss things of interest to me. Also, a lot of youz make me laugh.

Please include this exchange in your paper as it will show how the shameful cowardice of unregistered posters is born of weakness. I will say anything anyone wants because I don't own my own name. I am but a passing whisper stolen by the wind and borne far away to a putrid fate.
