Next to a really good coach, a great running book is one of the best investments you can make. I own maybe 2 dozen running books. Here are a few of my favorites.
The Complete Guide to Running by Earl Fee (Earl has set 50+ world records.)
Training for Young Distance Runners by Larry Greene and Russ Pate (Great for youth coaches or middle school and high school runners. In addition to training, it deals with physiology and emotions as well, which can be a lot different than dealing with adults. I wouldn't attempt to coach a younger runner without this book as a reference.)
Daniels' Running Formula by Jack Daniels. (3rd edition is coming out this Christmas!! I can't wait to see what the coach has learned and is going to share with us in his next update.)
Total Heart Rate Training: Customize and Maximize Your Workout Using a Heart Rate Monitor by Joel Friel. (Friel's approach is a better way to use HRMs, in my opinion.)
Daniels running formula is good.
