I listened to the clip and have to admit that I was laughing. I don't know what the point of that was, but I found it pretty funny. Gotta appreciate Rojo's willingness to say whatever he wants without worrying about people on here calling him an idiot

yeah it was very funny to listen to. rojo is being an idiot and has a good balance between being serious / knowing he's wrong. the guys on the radio are loving it.

How many timeouts did NY have at this point in the game? If they had a couple, they could have stopped the clock and forced another punt even if the Cowboys had made the first down.

Another wrinkle here is the possibility that something bad happens during the play. Romo gets sacked/picked/fumbles, the RB fumbles or whatever would be disaster. Of course the same could be said for a punt- snap is bad or maybe the return man takes it to the house. Not sure there's an easy way to calculate those odds.

The odds look at league historical averages from similar situations. Not sure exactly how it is done but it factors in the stuff you are talking about in terms of "something bad happens during the play."

The averages do not factor in the specific timeout situation. They assume you have the average number of timeouts left whatever that is. I added a minute to the clock to see what difference that would make (which might mimic the other team having another timeout). Brings the winning percentage of going for it down .02.

The main point is, the clock isn't much of a factor with 2:49 left. Plenty of time for the other team to score. You don't want the other team to get the ball. With 2:49 left or 3:49, go for it.

(The other caveat would be do not play the "leage average" prevent defense if you do punt. I think the general consensus of the stat geeks is are teams are too conservative on offense most of the time and that prevent defense is too conservative as well. Not sure of the defense part.)

If it was 49 seconds left you punt. The extra difference in yardage makes a big difference.
