SUU is awesome, Cedar will really grow on you and it’s an amazing place to train. Lots of hills and lots of trails along with amazing scenery.
I spent this last summer there building base, and walked away in far better shape than I’ve ever been in.
I grew up in Utah and due to finances had to stay in Utah for financial reasons, as I’m not full ride fast at the D1 level, and couldn’t go D2 or D3 due to D2 being academically weak and D3 being too expensive.
Here’s the main problem you may run into:
I began talking to the coach talking about joining the team looking to focus on middle distance, thinking I’d be a shoe in and maybe worthy of a small scholarship as my 800m and converted mile-1500 would be about average for the team. I was turned down and given walk on standards that would need to be hit before even trying out. These standards were faster than a lot of the runners already on the team could even run.
There’s a lot of ambition coming from the coach and team, and if you aren’t looking to be better than average upon joining you may not secure a spot.
If you are fast enough to safely secure a spot I’d say go for it. Like I said, cedar is awesome and I really enjoy it. Seems to be a great program as well.
