All the Olympic Games before 2004 seemed to do okay despite having a 10,000m prelim; I think it'll be alright.
the IAAF should consider making the 10,000 a diamond league event too. They almost look like the minors when so many runners chose road over the diamond league.
Doubling is getting more rare. How many guys did it this year? Farah and Rupp? Is that it?
The decision would impact those guys.
exactly, if you want less people just make harder standard time... this would only affect like 5 guys max in Rio...
Bad idea. It will just be a training jog for the real runners, but still an unnecessary one.

No it won't- It wasn't. I remember the Munich semi's being exciting. Shorter did it then ran the Marathon.
Today I think the double would be too tough but I'd like to see it.
Semis will only eliminate scrubs with no medal chance. To make them worthwhile, they would have to give Ken, ETH, etc 10 slots each.

The favorites were likely just toying with the scrubs and outkicked them easily. I'm not old enough to claim to know the players back in the day.
Or the field is more stratified today. In any event, only a few guys really have a chance at a 10,000 medal today. Most of the guys who lined up in Moscow had no chance.
In Munich two of the heats finished within 15 secs of the WR at the time. Not exactly toying.
There were no heats in 64 or 68. I marked in my 1964 Official Programme that, of the 43 entered, 38 started that 10,000 metres race. By the first turn some runners were already out of it. I would think that how you train would have to do with how many races you have to run and how many runners are to start the final race. Realistically, I guess you have to be ready for anything.
Can you post a link? Also it would be the IAAF that would need to approve.
Are they going to expand the field and then run a round to get it down?
IOC is not big on allowing more athletes.
If the field size is a problem just raise the standard to qualify

You got it backwards. They want MORE people not less. Hence the prelim.
The 10K had the fewest competitors of any athletics event in 2012, men's and women's side.

Jake Robertson, Yuki Sato, maybe a couple other non-contenders.
they should add a 2nd heat in the 800 like they used to have.
that way going from the semi to the final won't be as much of a crap shoot

No such thing has been proposed. And if it was proposed, it would have to be proposed by the IAAF first for IOC to act on it. That's the same IAAF that is deemphasizing XC and is sponsoring the Diamond League that removed the 10000 because nobody wants to watch it on TV.
I cannot accept any male with 12.9 speed as an athlete. There are masters women (several, in fact) who have run faster than that this year. This is not the Paralympics. We do not need made-up events so non-athletic losers can feel good about themselves. Let Farah either run 1500 with the big boys or run road races with the rest of the hobby joggers.
I like the idea if it means a less crowded field in the final.

agreed
lets get rid of every event except the 100
