This is a long post, so I'll explicitly state what I'm proposing, then go into why I think this way and what my aims are.
I want to qualify for the trials. I believe I can do this. But, I want to share this experience with others....lots of others. In fact, I would want to share this with a community of runners, with whom I have trained and lived. I want a team, but not in the sense we Americans understand it. It ought not cost any money. The unifying force will be a shared goal to achieve individual potential by maximizing it through a collective effort. It needs to be large scale though. More than a 'camp' sponsored by some company. It needs to be a community in some sense.
What is it going to take? Answer me this.
I have read a recent thread, 'Why we're all not running 2:22', and it made me think of something. How come we are not making a collective effort to help each other reach our maximum potential?
I'm sure there's a lot of different ways to answer this question. But I would like to narrow this question to something even more important (at least to me), how come those of us who are serious about qualifying for the trials are not making a conscious and collective effort to 'get there'? I initially thought of some reasons why I might not.....convience of present situation (job, freinds, family), pride ('us and them' mantality), fear of unknown or ignorance of unknown (what else is there....there is no other way). If you're not currently sponsored in any way (shoe company or other), then you are 'going the path alone' in the sense that it is YOUR dream, YOUR adventure, YOUR whatever. Why think this way? Does this approach seem a little too individualistic, and consequently, impractical? Other groups have shown that a collective effort yeilds superior results on the whole (Kenyans). Is it because they have better organization than the running community here in America? Maybe, but I think only this is only a partial answer.
I want to answer my own questions (but I'd really like to hear some genuine responses to what I'm suggesting). We don't make a collective effort to reach common goals and this is impractical. I recently graduated from college, I am training for the trials, and trying to work to support myself. I TRAIN with others to achieve MY goal of qualifying for the trials, but there seems to be other areas I have yet to explore, which could not only benefit me and my goals, but others and their goals.
A way to collectively reach my olympic birth would be to shack up with others who have the same goal, train like crazy TOGETHER, share expenses, and reach the trials. This seems to happen on a small scale, such as 4 or 5 runners, or maybe more in track club (Nike Farm Team, Hansons). What would happen if a group of these teams came together?
An ideal (maybe utopia) collective would be this: get as many runners as possible, to move to one location for 6 months to a year, and train. Some may say, this already happens to a certain extent. I don't think so. I see teams, clubs, individuals, but I do not see a COMMUNITY. Imagine a community of runners, comparable to an Olympic village of athletes, that share a common goal to maximize potential. Put all training theory aside......this would produce the best. It would take some motivatin individuals to organize such a scene, but I believe it is possible to a certain extent.
I'm willing to make the sacrifice and move......what city should it be?
