It is something that generations of athletes were dreaming about. The 400 m used to be such a nasty, discriminating event... You couldn't virtually compete if you were less than 180 cm tall (unless you could compensate your height handicap by some peculiar physiological advantage). But thanks to the genial coaches from the Caribbean (and their wonderfully gifted athletes), this is no longer true. Apparently, at the same time when Jamaican sprinters developed their unique, top secret training methods for the 100-200 m, the Caribbean coaches finally found a way, how to increase your anaerobic capacity disproportionally to your body size. It is so evident: During the last 4 years, the average height of a 400 m medal winner decreased by whopping 3 cm (something that has no parallel in any other athletic event) and now the standard fell to mere 179 cm!
Now this distance will be open to all midgets of the world, and rowing will certainly follow the 400 m in this path. No more discrimination of small people! I must only hope that the Caribbeans will share their secrets with us. At least, if they whispered it to the ear of some WADA's employee!
