WARNING! What you are about to read is based entirely upon the assumptions and mental ramblings of an angry 25 year old corporate whore whose marathon PR is no where near 2:22. I'd be willing to bet on all of what I'm about to write, but have no data or empirical evidence to back up any of it.
people in early 20's are putting more emphasis on getting a stable, good paying job right out of college......and for good reason. the amount of debt that students are graduating from college with (primarily student loans) compared to salaries being paid is much more disproportionate than what it was in early 80's when 2:20 was a "good" marathon time, but not the kind of time that people were scratching their heads about trying to figure out how to run. the inflation of college tuition has got to be a reason people "need" to settle down right out of school. yes, you can go to a state university and reduce your tuition quite a bit, but i know lots of people who went to state u's and graduated with just as much SL debt as i did ($23,000 from a private university).
has the average work week gotten longer for those who do take jobs? can anyone shed light on this? right now i'm working 55-60 hours a week and running 70 -80 miles per week on 6 runs per week. to eat (lots) and sleep (9 hours a night) even at a level of sustenance, i'm doing all i can. if i were working just 40 hpw, i'd have 15-20 more to eat, sleep, run, etc. people say...well, just get a job working just 40 hours a week. i don't think there is such a thing anymore......at least not one that pays a college graduate well enough to pay off their debt in a timely manner, and pay rent, and food, etc. technology has sped up the pace of business incredibly in the last 20 yrs, demanding more people to sit at there desks and answer phones, cell-phones, e-mails, faxes, conference calls. business did not move like this 20 yrs ago....did people then have time to run at lunch, after work etc....punch in at 8am, out 4pm. even the people at my company say that it was standard 40 hours 20 yrs ago. now the standard is 50 - 60.
i'll keep this point short......more kids are playing other sports and not running track. i believe this, but don't feel that it impacts the # of guys in their 20's and 30's running under 2:20 in the thon.
all of this being said, if all i had to do was run, train, eat, and sleep.....i could crap a 2:22 in the marathon. i'd even welcome a 40 hour work week to let me have a shot at 2:22. but i live in my reality of 55 - 60 hpw and will still try my damdest. i got out of debt last month (car and student loans paid for) and have got to decide if i've got the balls to quit my gig and back up what i just said. can i crap a 2:22 - yes. can many of us? yes. has $$, jobs, work weeks, and debt trapped many of us? definitely. can we do anything about it? who the hell knows.
props to JasonInAsia for being case and point of what i'm trying to say. b/c unless he's lying about his lifestyle, it sounds like he has a lot more time to run and train than i do or most of us do. he's got himself a ticket to Birmingham next year as a result.
